This is cool - the prolonged dry weather has revealed the outline of ‘The Great Parterre’ beneath the South Lawn at #Chatsworth. It was a #garden created for the 1st Duke of Devonshire around 1699 and it disappeared beneath a new landscape in the 1730s. The hot, dry conditions created contrast between the shallower-rooted turf and the original garden layout, and have allowed its spectacular swirling patterns to re-emerge.

The recent hot, dry conditions have created contrast between the shallower-rooted turf laid over old paths and borders and the grass laid over the original garden layout. Allowing the old garden's spectacular swirling patterns to re-emerge, as well as the original paths that went in a full circle around the fountain and extended vertically and horizontally across the garden.
