Cēsis Castle, previousle called Wenden Castle, was the political seat and military headquarters of the leaders of Livonian Order - a crusader state that was the largest and most influential entity within the Livonian Confederation.
The Confederation comprised modern Latvia and Estonia, existed in the 15th-16th centuries, and fell to the Russian invasion under the tsar Ivan IV the Terrible in 1558-1561. Poland and Sweden then intervened, defeated Russia after a long war, and divided Livonian lands between themselves.
