What happens if you keep going north? The direction north on the Earth, the place on your horizon below the northern spin pole of the Earth -- around which other stars appear to slowly swirl, will remain the same. This spin-pole-of-the-north will never move from its fixed location on the sky -- night or day -- and its height will always match your latitude. The further north you go, the higher the north spin pole will appear. Eventually, if you can reach the Earth's North Pole, the stars will circle a point directly over your head. Pictured, a four-hour long stack of images shows stars trailing in circles around this north celestial pole. The bright star near the north celestial pole is Polaris, known as the North Star. The bright path was created by the astrophotographer's headlamp as he zigzagged up a hill just over a week ago in Lower Saxony, Germany. The astrophotographer can be seen, at times, in shadow. Actually, the Earth has two spin poles -- and much the same would happen if you started below the Earth's equator and went south.

Explanation:
When do cloud bottoms appear like bubbles? Normally, cloud bottoms are flat. This is because moist warm air that rises and cools will condense into water droplets at a specific temperature, which usually corresponds to a very specific height. As water droplets grow, an opaque cloud forms. Under some conditions, however, cloud pockets can develop that contain large droplets of water or ice that fall into clear air as they evaporate. Such pockets may occur in turbulent air near a thunderstorm. Resulting mammatus clouds can appear especially dramatic if sunlit from the side. The mammatus clouds pictured here, lasting only a few minutes, were photographed over Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, just after a storm in 2012.

MARS HAS
A MAINTENANCE PROBLEM 💎
Yesterday, I was writing about human beings on Mars, and one question kept nagging at me. People say we’ll send the robots first.
Fine.
But getting to Mars, landing there, and then working for years in the Martian environment are brutal demands on machines, not to mention the ongoing industry, building and maintenance work to be done upon arrival.
Radiation damages electronics and computer chips. Extreme temperature swings stress materials. The red dust gets in everywhere. Moving parts wear out. Bearings fail. Electric motors fail. Cables fail. Sensors fail. And there is nobody there with a toolbox.
So the usual answer is: send lots of robots, make them modular, give them spare parts, and let them repair one another. Which sounds sensible until you ask the obvious question.
WHO REPAIRS THE ROBOT THAT REPAIRS THE ROBOTS?
A Mars colony built by machines would need far more than a few clever humanoids to unload the rockets.
MARS WILL NEED SOMETHING CLOSE TO AN AUTONOMOUS INDUSTRIAL SYSTEM.
Robots maintaining robots. Robots replacing worn parts. Robots diagnosing faults. Robots manufacturing components. Robots keeping power, communications, mining, transport and construction working for years without a single human engineer ever standing beside them.
And eventually, if the whole thing is supposed to become independent of Earth, they would need to make their own replacement parts from local Martian materials.
That is not a small detail.
THAT IS PRACTICALLY AN ENTIRE CIVILIZATION OF MACHINES.
We have become very good at landing robots on Mars. We have not yet demonstrated a self-maintaining robotic economy on Earth, let alone on another world.
So perhaps the real question is not: “Can Elon Musk send robots to Mars?” Quite possibly. The harder question is:
CAN HE SEND A SYSTEM THAT CAN KEEP ITSELF ALIVE?
Because if the answer is no, then the robots are not building a colony.
They are just waiting to break.
