Does anyone know how to allow the quoting of posts from @peertube?
I just tried to quote this post from my own PeerTube instance, but it says that's not permitted:

what a lot of people don't understand about #mastodon (hello new #bluesky people) is that, due to the nature of federated servers, you're almost certainly not seeing some (or any!) of the responses to someone's post. to gain this important context, the default mastodon web client has an option in the three dots menu to "open original page". you will then be enlightened. #FediTips
Do you want help with using Mastodon or the wider Fediverse?
You can ask questions by replying or messaging, and I'll try to find you some answers 🙂
Don't worry if a question seems simple, there is no such thing as a stupid question.
If you prefer to look stuff up yourself, there is lots of help for using Mastodon and the Fediverse on the website at https://fedi.tips (new people might especially like the "Quick Start" section at the top).
Reminder that you can find thousands of hand-picked accounts to follow on here sorted into hundreds of categories on my website at:
To follow an account from the site, copy-paste its Fediverse address into the search box in Mastodon etc, then click "Follow".
To find out more about an account on the site, just click its Fediverse address.
Can I ask a favour?
If you see someone who is asking for help using this place, and if no one else is helping them, could you tag me into the conversation and/or link to my website https://fedi.tips?
I'm trying to provide unofficial tech support for people using Mastodon and the wider Fediverse. I'm especially keen to help new people who want easy-to-understand advice, but they won't see me and I won't see them unless someone tags me.
Thanks 🙏
If you see an account on here that looks blank to you, it might not actually be blank!
It probably just looks blank to you because no one from your server follows the account yet. If you follow the account, its posts will start gradually showing up on your server too.
If you want to see the account before following:
1. Go to its profile page
2. Click on ⋯
3. Choose "Open in browser" (this option may be called "View on..." or "Show original page" in different apps/interfaces)
New mastodon feature now allows you to automatically mail a pipe bomb to anyone on your block list!!
Would you like to make your PeerTube accounts and videos more visible? Do you want to reach more viewers and more followers?
I've done a guide to promoting your PeerTube accounts, channels and videos at:
I've tried to list everything I could think of, let me know if I've missed anything! 🙂
Would you like to create posts longer than 500 characters on Mastodon?
You can have longer posts by moving your account to a server that offers longer posts. I've done a list of well-run reliable servers with larger post sizes at:
https://fedi.garden/tag/larger-post-size
If you're not sure how to move your account to a different server, there's a step-by-step guide at https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server
If you're searching Mastodon, there are special phrases called "operators" that you can include to narrow down your search. For example, if you just want to search your own posts you can include the operator from:me alongside your keywords.
There's a complete guide to searching Mastodon including a list of all the operators at:
You can combine several operators in one search to narrow it even further, or include a minus sign - to exclude stuff.
You can discover thousands of hand-picked Fediverse accounts organised into hundreds of different topics on the FediFollows website at:
- To follow an account listed on the site, paste its address into your search box on Mastodon etc.
- To find out more about an account, click on its address to see its profile.
You don't need to wait for me to randomly post accounts on an interesting topic, the site has accounts for lots of topics! 🙂
the latest mastodon update has added a feature that allows you to mail a pipe bomb to any of your mutuals
There is a Fediverse alternative to Substack called Ghost. It allows you to host blogs and newsletters in a very similar way to Substack, but it has much less problematic management and you can host your own Ghost-powered site if you want to.
Lots more info about Ghost in the guide at:
Would also highly recommend the article by @molly0xfff which outlines the advantages of Ghost over Substack:

Just a reminder: If you follow me, you’ll probably see a lot of posts related to #hashtagGames on your feed. If this annoys you, find one of the posts with the #hashTagGames hashtag, click on the hashtag, and select “Mute #HashTagGames”. Problem solved!
You can search Mastodon for posts in specific languages using the operator "language:" followed by a language code. For example to search Mastodon for posts in French you would include language:fr in your search.
BUT... how do you know the language code to use? Well that's where this guide to Mastodon's language codes comes in handy:
You don't need to memorise these, the idea is just to look up the specific language code you want from the list.
When I interviewed @Gargron he said that education was key to @Mastodon and the fediverse growing. That, along with the algorithm-free approach of most ActivityPub-supporting platforms, inspired me to create https://algo.free
It covers the benefits of going algo-free, provides ActivityPub-powered alternatives to centralized, algo-driven platforms, and offers tips for getting started.
⚠️ If you @ someone in a post on Mastodon, that person will be notified and they will be able to see that post. This happens no matter what visibility you're using for your post, even if it's a DM or a followers-only post.
So, be really careful if you @ someone!
If you want to mention an account without the account seeing the post, replace the @ signs with the word AT before you publish, and make sure you're using a non-public visibility like followers-only or DMs.
Your Mastodon account only lets you sign in on one server. However, because the servers talk to each other you can follow and interact with people from other servers.
It's a bit like mobile phone SIM cards: you can only use a SIM card to get service from one phone provider, but because phone providers talk to each other you can still call people who use totally different providers.
