I love how thoughtful the Mastodon blog post about introducing quote posting is. A really interesting way the team could be even more impactful on the open social web would be to share their research findings and the thinking that went into these sorts of features - that's the sort of body of knowledge everyone could learn from. https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2025/09/introducing-quote-posts/

#mastodon #fediverse

What are the activity_id formats for various platforms?

TL;DR: Any of you who are more familiar with Fediverse platforms that aren’t Lemmy/Piefed, can you let me know what the AP_IDs look like for users, posts, comments, and, if applicable, communities?

So, I’ve rewritten the search / search boxes in Tesseract to skip the search and directly resolve activity pub URLs for users, posts, comments, and communities. I’m loving this as it makes things so much faster and easier.

To make that work, and reduce false positives/negatives, I have to do some pre-flight checks on the URL that’s submitted to the search.

Currently, it checks if the domain is to a known federated instance and looks for specific paths in the URL. If it detects the URL is an AP_ID URL, it will only resolve the object and redirect you to it (skipping the lengthy search step). For false negatives, it will pass it to the regular search but still try a federated lookup along with the search.

For Lemmy and Piefed, those are:

/u/ for users
/c/ for communities
/post/ for posts
/comment/ for comments.

For Mbin, I think it’s the same except it uses /m/ for communities (they call them “magazines” I believe).

I think mastoon uses /user or maybe /username/ in the AP identifiers?

Any of you who are more familiar with Fediverse platforms that aren’t Lemmy/Piefed, can you let me know what the AP_IDs look like for users, posts, comments, and, if applicable, communities?

OK, so the results from my very unscientific #NobelPrize in #Physics topic poll are in, and the winner is … Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics (or “AMO”, as it’s short-handed). Hot on the heels of AMO is Astrophysics and Cosmology. Particle Physics was the hands-down least-favoured topic.

So, let’s go one more step and see what the #fediverse thinks are its favourite **discoveries** that might attract the prize. Let’s stick to AMO and Astro/Cosmo, since those are the preferred areas.

Inkwell - a multi-tenant long-form writing platform for the fediverse (open source, FEP-b2b8)

Wanted to share something with this community and see if it’s useful to anyone. Inkwell (inkwell.social) is an open source, multi-tenant social journaling platform built on ActivityPub. The goal is to fill the long-form writing gap in the fediverse in a way that’s accessible to non-technical users, not just developers who can spin up their own instance of WriteFreely or Ghost.

What it does: users sign up, write journal entries or articles, and those posts federate as Article objects per FEP-b2b8 with preview Notes so they render cleanly in Mastodon and other microblogging clients. You get a title, excerpt, and link rather than a decontextualized URL. Follows, boosts, and likes all work bidirectionally with Mastodon.

It’s ad-free, algorithm-free, and the code is open source on GitHub (github.com/stantondev/inkwell). The hosted instance is at inkwell.social if you want to try it, or you can self-host your own.

Some things that might interest this community: ActivityPub federation with HTTP signature verification, Stamps (emotional reactions) instead of generic likes, a tipping system called Postage for supporting writers, newsletter delivery, custom profile themes, and data import from other platforms. Currently working on improving comment edit propagation and post scope handling for better fediverse compatibility based on community feedback.

Would love to hear thoughts, especially from anyone who’s been looking for a long-form option in the fediverse or anyone interested in running their own instance. What’s working, what’s missing, what would make this more useful to the ecosystem?

#fediverse #activitypub #longform #writing #opensource

To upgrade from 1.3.x:

git pull
git checkout v1.4.x
./deploy.sh or ./deploy-docker.sh
