A subtoot: corporations, and corporate(-like) behavior, are political. Anyone claiming that corporate-like work is apolitical--work that includes business-friendly software development whether it occurs within the walls of a corporate entity or not--is either naive or deliberately obfuscating reality.

"Politics" isn't only about institutions. It's about organizing large numbers of people to do something they wouldn't otherwise do. Corporations organize large numbers of people to do things they probably wouldn't do if they weren't paid and/or didn't need the money to live. 10,000 people wouldn't spontaneously get together and spend the best hours of their days for months building a commercial jet airliner if there weren't corporate structures in place and a society that keeps them close enough to deprivation that they will do this in exchange for money.

F-droid was the first thing I thought of when I saw the news come by of Google's plan to turn Android more into iOS. Custom roms are already a dying breed due to all the crap that Google has been pulling, and now this.

It's such a shame we've ended up with a smartphone OS duopoly. It could've been so much better, sigh.

The level of pedantry in the replies is unreal. I know the Linux/FOSS crowd can be pedantic, but come on.

The Linux phone category is about phones running standard Linux systems, not Android/AOSP derivatives.

What makes a Linux phone:

Package managers (apt, pacman, apk)
Standard GNU/Linux tooling without Android wrappers
FOSS interfaces like Phosh or Plasma Mobile
No Google/Apple app ecosystem dependency

Actual options:

@pine64 (PinePhone) - hardware made for Linux
@volla - ships with Ubuntu Touch option
Used Android phones repurposed with @postmarketOS or @mobian

The honest tradeoff: These won't match Android/iOS for battery, call reliability, or app availability. The modem is still proprietary blob territory regardless.

But the category matters because it is about what you can run and who controls it, not kernel semantics.

If someone needs a daily driver and doesn't trust Google/Apple: repurposed Pixel with postmarketOS, or accept Android with hardened privacy settings. If they want to tinker/support the ecosystem: PinePhone.

Both are valid depending on whether you need a phone that works or a phone you own.

My students want to improve their home lab backups and have come up with the idea of storing their offsite backups with each other instead of in the cloud.
My question is, does anyone know of any software or solutions for this? It doesn't have to be open source, but it would be best if it were. The option to encrypt the backups is not essential, but would be preferable.
