A strong sandstorm is hitting the area. Many tents have been blown away, and palm trees have fallen onto the tents of displaced people, causing injuries to some of them.

This is a reminder that the #genocide continues, the closure of food crossings persists, and the situation is worsening.

There has been a very impressive sandstorm in Khan Yunis #Gaza #Palestine today. The photos are beautiful, but everyone is scared to go out, or to breathe unhealthy air. This is very rare, it only happens once every few years. I hope it doesn’t last for long.

With the war in Iran, Israel closed the Rafah crossing again, which caused panic buying in Gaza. Now markets have empty stalls.

I gave two of the three gifts I can afford to give this week to #Gaza, to people I already know and regularly communicate with; I woke up this morning thinking I knew who I would give the third gift to.

But I've just learned of a young unmarried woman living in a tent, caring for younger siblings (and I think some other people, I'm not yet fully clear). She appears to have no support at all.

It is really hard to decide! So many are in need, and it's so hard to judge who is in most need!

I've been thinking about an emerging issue here on the #Fediverse, and I would like to suggest we solve it collaboratively.

Issue

Civilians in #Gaza are trying to provide food, medical treatment, and basic necessities for their families. They can't see upfront who would be willing to support them here on the #Fediverse. They can't stay silent either, just watching their kids and vulnerable family members suffer.

So they add long lists of recipients to their posts, and maybe also sent direct messages to a long list of people.

Some recipients feel helpless, because they're already donating. Some people get upset because they do not want to receive a stream of direct messages.

Suggestion

Let's use a ""#hashtag" (to be determined):

1) When you post a call for donations, write it without a long list of recipients, so everybody reading feels addressed by it.

Include the "#hashtag", to encourage boosts.

2) When you're willing to support civilians in Gaza who are in need, subscribe to the ""#hashtag".

No need to boost all of the posts you will see. If we are many, each of us boosting a single post a day will spread the message. If you don't think a post is a genuine call for help, just don't boost it. If you see malicious abuse of the hashtag, to harm its efficiency, report the abusers.

3) Whoever doesn't want to see the "#hashtag" can filter it.

Does that sound reasonable?

If you think this is a reasonable approach, please favorite and boost. Optionally reply with a "#hashtag" suggestion that:

Signals respect for people and institutions in need
Makes it clear it's about aid and donations for people and humanitarian institutions on the ground (not just generically about Gaza)
Suggests boosts are also a form of help, if one can't donate (more)

I'll collect all suggestions from the replies on Thursday Aug 13th midnight UTC, and post a vote listing all of them, that will run for another week, to determine the most favorited one.

Je pense d'abord que le silence est différent de la neutralité. Choisir de rester silencieux.se alors que tout le monde a accès à l'information est pour moi de la complicité.

Par exemple ici pour moi, sur un réseau qui se dit anti GAFAM et anti fascism, les personnes qui restent silencieuses alors que nous sommes des centaines à soutenir les palestinien.nes toute la journée et des centaines d'autres à diffuser de l'information sur ce qui se passe à #Gaza ou au #Liban, est inacceptable. C'est de la complicité et c'est pour moi inacceptable.

Celleux qui ne défendent pas les militant.e.s sont aussi complices de Génocide, d'Écocide et de Crimes contre l'humanité.

C'est clair pour moi.

La neutralité avouée c'est différent. Je ne vais sans doute pas me faire que des ami.e.s. Mais pour moi la neutralité n'est pas le silence. Le CICR n'est pas complice. On a besoin de sa neutralité.

So, please, if you need to mute or block an account, do so. If you’re a server admin and you notice mass automated messages, you’re well within your rights to limit or suspend an account but if it’s not automated, please contact us so we can talk to them and explain why what they’re doing isn’t in their long term interests. Many of you already do and I thank you for it.

Please also realise that there are hundreds of Palestinians who are Gaza verified and they are all suffering through genocide and many are watching their families starve or die due to lack of access to modern medicine (again, because Israel has bombed all the hospitals and doesn’t let aid through as part of its ongoing genocide).

In many Western countries, our governments are directly complicit and, many times, profiting from Israel’s genocide.

Whatever you do, please don’t judge the entirety of something by the actions of a few and please try and keep things – namely Internet etiquette and genocide – in perspective and ask yourselves what you would do if you were in their shoes.
