“If you don’t want trouble, get out of here immediately, go into your homes. Don’t leave the house”
Gideon Levy and photographer Alex Levac witnessed a gang of settlers stealing olives from a Palestinian family’s grove while the owner watched helplessly. A settler threatened residents and ordered them inside. When residents called police, an officer threatened to arrest the caller for making a false report and hung up when asked who owned the land.
[…] About ten families live in a-Rahniya, all members of the extended al-Masri family. Now the police call one of them, who had tried to report the settlers’ incursion. The policewoman threatens him: “This isn’t your land. According to our checks, this isn’t your land. If you call us again, I’ll arrest you for making a false report.” The experienced Nawaj’ah takes the phone. “There’s also damage to property here,” he tells the policewoman in a lawyer’s Hebrew, and she shrieks: “I’m ending this call. This isn’t your property. This isn’t your land, and I’m ending this call.” Nawaj’ah tries again: “This is Area B,” and then asks the decisive question: “So whose land is it?” The policewoman hangs up. The victim becomes the accused, threatened by the police and the settlers; the thief becomes the one in the right.
