Luxulyan Valley, Cornwall

A deep valley full of industrial archaeology, now partially reclaimed by nature: mining, stone quarrying and china clay production that required a robust transport system of tramways, inclines and leats. It includes Treffry Viaduct over the river that ran a tramway on the top and transported water underneath the track.

Superb place. And great weather when we went a week or so ago.

A viaduct (or bridge) with high walls either side and a floor made of granite slabs. Across the slabs, lines are visible that show where the track of the tramway was laid. At the junction of the walls and the floor there is green vegetation growing, some low and some taller. In the distance at the end of the viaduct is a woodland of tall trees in leaf.

A very small building made of irregular blocks of granite. It has a window but no roof. The tops of the walls are covered in tall grass. Around the bottom of the walls is lush vegetation including foxgloves. It may have been what was known as a crib hut, where workers could rest and eat.

A derelict industrial site. On the left are walls supporting a chute for water. Below there would have been a waterwheel driven by the water from the chute. All that is left of the wheel is the central bearings that sit across the wheelpit. Everywhere is overgrown with vegetation and in the background are thin trees and bushes. The power from the waterwheel was used to haul wagons up an incline.
