Imagine a world where every small hobbyist or volunteer dev has to register with a global corporation just to share their work. That's the world Google is building for Android in 2026. https://keepandroidopen.org @keepandroidopen

If it hadn't been for #keepandroidopen , my plan had now been to make acrylic paintings with QR code on water and juice bottles at a large Juice press.
Can't be done now ;/
I am now looking for someone who will create an icon theme for Linux with me and release new versions.
And then I can do that with the juice press.
Let's see how long this takes me to find someone.
Google announced that as of September 2026, it will no longer be possible to develop apps for the Android platform without first registering centrally with Google. This registration will involve:
- Paying a fee to Google
- Agreeing to Google’s Terms and Conditions
- Providing government identification
- Uploading evidence of the developer’s private signing key
- Listing all current and future application identifiers
I urge all developers of #Android apps to NOT pre-emptively obey the new terms of #Google requiring you to sign up for the Android Developer Console.
It looks like Google is attempting a power grab and wants to prevent ALL installations of Android apps without official Google approval; even those installed outside Google Play.
This is an attack on both developer and user freedom and unacceptable.

Not sure where #Google asked for feedback about their developer verification program, but they surely didn't talk with #FLOSS devs, civil society, privacy organisations or their #Android users
#FDroid did since September, and interacted with folks in the Fediverse, forum, email and in person
They all voiced one opinion: "developer verification must be stopped"
@marcprux has written an open letter, signed by likeminded organisations who want to #keepandroidopen
Click: https://f-droid.org/2026/02/24/open-letter-opposing-developer-verification.html
#FDroid & Basic 2.0-rc0 are live:
* Reduce opacity of feature graphic
* Enable certificate transparency for known domains (Both thanks to Thore Göbel)
* Remember expanded state of app description in app details
* Fix bug with display of chosen panic app (Full only)
* Fix bug with DB migration when updating from older versions
'R' stands for Release, so get all your devices (#Android 7 or newer) updated, test a bit, search a bit, install a bit and report your pain points. #KeepAndroidOpen

The OpenStreetMap Foundation has signed the open letter to Google to Keep Android Open.
Google quere facer das súas e pechar máis ainda o ecosistema Android, así para pedir que reconsideren a súa decisión: https://c.org/mcdkhChzMJ

Ha, good that I'm still a registered android developer, so my protest hopefully also tells that people aren't happy.
Maybe I'm gonna write the EU representatives tomorrow as well. It's really a shame what's going on there.

Google's assault on F-Droid has begun. They are permitting malicious actors to claim other people's apps and take them over. As we've warned, this is going to destroy F-Droid and independent app distribution around the world. Speak out and help stop them at https://keepandroidopen.org. #keepandroidOpen

More than 200k users said NO!
More than 70 organisations signed a letter saying NO!
#FDroid wrote posts on why NOT!
We've talked with you and your representatives, around the world.
We've made the #KeepAndroidOpen website to explain it.
If you read the #Android tech news, you saw it.
If you use a search engine, you found it.
If you've asked their own #Gemini, you got the summary.
But who didn't see, hear or read anything from above? Yes, #Google
For your saftety? https://f-droid.org/2026/07/01/adv-malware.html
The mandatory #developer registration #Google is imposing on #Android raises concerns for developers in sanctioned countries, anonymous open-source contributors, and anyone building #privacy or #security tools. Google has a documented history of complying with #government demands to remove apps. @keepandroidopen #KeepAndroidOpen https://keepandroidopen.org
