Another thing is, in #FreeBSD and also #Linux, using #efibootmgr to change #UEFI boot entries is quite handy. But it is not available for #OpenBSD and #NetBSD . However seems NetBSD has got something cooking already in -current and it is called efi.

Hey #linux people and #developers, I need your advice.

My 8 year old son has fallen in love with this old laptop that honestly isn't useful for that much as the speed and wifi is so slow.

But he says he wants to learn how to code on it.

This brought me back to the days of GW-basic when I was a kid.

Is there something like gw or q basic for Linux. Something that would run on a 32 bit computer?

#linux top command explained https://turnoff.us/geek/linux-top-explained/

The Linux comic humorously shows and explains how the Linux command "top" works. It displays running processes sorted by CPU usage. The penguins represent these processes, with the larger ones indicating higher resource consumption.

So I read a bit on #Slackware #Linux. but still curious. Is the Slackware does not handle dependency statement true? Or is it just not handled by default but if you use some third-party tools you get dependencies resolved apt/pacman style? Also related to this, I saw videos / tutorials on installing the systems, so it is generally recommended to simply install tons of packages you might not need in the first place just so when you need them or any other thing that might need something there as dependencies and you will have them already? Seems like trying to do a one-thing-fit-all style to me.

The current PPC based #Amiga motherboards are ridiculously expensive for what they are. This work-in-progress project aims to provide an #opensource #hardware board that is capable of running AmigaOS 4, MorphOS and #linux

It's already providing more features than the 'official' boards, this could turn out to be a great addition to the Amiga world.

I am a human, but my little bot posts a random Linux command daily. If you don't want to see it you can mute the LinuxLexiconBot hashtag.

Found a printer and Linux saves the day again

I was walking home yesterday and I just happened to come across an HP LaserJet p2035n sitting by the dumpster, waiting to be taken away. I’ve never owned a printer, but this thing looked like it came from an era when such devices were made to be reliable instead of forcing DRM-locked cartridges, so I picked it up and took it with me. After getting situated I started some online research and I figure this brand of printers was manufactured from about 2008-2012, and my printer has a 2012 date.

As it turns out, this tossed printer works perfectly fine. I plugged it into power and ran a test sheet, and it prints almost perfectly. I plugged it via USB-B into my PC running Fedora 41 and immediately it gets picked up and added as usable printer. I then plugged the printer into its Ethernet port and fortunately this thing is new enough to have Bonjour (i.e. mdns) services so once again my PC just immediately finds it and can print. Awesome!

My laptop is a MacBook. While it did detect the printer over the network, it couldn’t add the printer because it couldn’t find a driver to operate it. I honestly don’t understand why that’s a problem since I assume macOS also uses CUPS just like Linux. But at any rate, I found the solution:

With CUPS on Linux I can share the printer. After configuring firewall-cmd to allow the ipp service now my iPhone and my MacBook can also print to the shared printer using the generic PostScript driver. So, in conclusion, Linux helped me 1) use this printer with no additional effort of installing drivers, 2) share this printer to devices which were not plug-and-play ready, and 3) print pics of Goku and Vegeta. As always, I love Linux.

Why are SSH keys better than passwords for authentication under #Linux ??

Because trying to brute-force a good SSH key is like trying to find a specific grain of sand on all the world's beaches... while blindfolded... and the beaches are on different planets 😂

Let me take you #linux people on a little journey. Right now, there is a war. A war between those who fear the future of #nix and #NixOS and those who are apparently not getting the point.

To call something #opensource can mean so much nowadays. When it comes to the idea of an enterprise nixpkgs vs the open source or "community" #nixpkgs, I think it's time to make it clear:

#DeterminateSystems wants to have it's own #RHEL. Functions are decoupled from nix for a reason.
