Light on resources. I can run this on a potato if I wanted and it would run great (I'm not, but I could.)
Backups are easy. Tar up the directory. Done.
Migrations are easy. Install nginx, build snac, untar backup. Done.
Quirky web interface. It takes a little to get used to it, but it is very functional and it's got character. I thought I would use Phanpy with it more, but I'm not. I enjoy the snac web interface.
Works (mostly) with Mastodon clients.
No crazy caching of photos, avatars and other media. This is a really big deal because my disk usage is so much lower than when I ran Mastodon.
No database. NO DATABASE. So good.
Fast. snac is really fast doing everything. It's nice.
@grunfink is awesome. Friendly and responsive.

Happy 9th anniversary to the first Mastodon post!
I am creating a #ActivityPub minimalistic implementation of a badge system similar to Credly, built using #dotnet and leveraging the #Fediverse
I have issued a first badge, the idea is to decentralize the verification systems, and allow organizations to self-certify. It is incredible that organizations like Microsoft or Non-Profits pay thousands of dollars to companies like Pearson to just provide "verified" badges. Similar to mastodons installed in social-dot-something, thinkg of badges<dot> mozilla<dot>com , certifications<dot>myschooldistrict<dot>com. Or even a podcast emitting a badge for its guests, with the verification in the domain.
ActivityPub already offers a secure way to sign artifacts and interact between actors. The fediverse already have people with profiles, a social graph as @mike says, ready to use. Think of how LetsEncrypt disrupted that market of few actors selling certificates for websites.
I have a functional poc,
@fediverse is not a mastodon, pledora or blog, it is an actor in a badge system, but you can follow it in Mastodon. Its badges will show in #mastodon but they are not notes or articles. If you want to learn more, follow me, I will be sharing the progress here. Or follow the github project here: https://github.com/tryvocalcat/activitypub-badges
Who wants a badge of early adopter?

Will the last small site turn off the lights?
The UK Online Safety Act imposes the same duties and penalties on blogs, forums and fedi instances as huge platforms.
Many small, safely moderated sites will shut down or block UK users.
Crushing competition is the last thing we need for a safer Internet!
Act now before 17 March ⬇️

A couple of years back I wrote a blog post about linking my static blog posts to Mastodon threads so that the threads can serve as blog comments.
I realise I never pinned that post to my profile, and I have since deleted the Mastodon thread, so I'm sharing it again. I'm pinning it this time!
While I was lying in the hammock yesterday (clicking on my iPhone), I started thinking about the current state of the "Twitter diaspora", the cross-posting, bridging and separation… and I ended up with this blog post 😅
TLDR: let's try to settle on the open networks, Bluesky & Fedi, let's connect them well, and let's move away from Twitter.

Is there an account you follow that boosts other people too much? Do you like reading their own posts, but you don't want to see their boosts?
In Mastodon you can hide an account's boosts by doing the following:
1. Go to their profile page
2. Click the ⋯ button on their profile
3. Select "Hide boosts"
You will still see their posts, it will only hide boosts. If you change your mind, go to ⋯ and select "Show boosts".
They will never know you have hidden their boosts 🙂
Forget ghost!
NodeBB is not only FLOSS, it's also a great federated forum software!
Just look up [email protected]
This is a profile on NodeBB but you can watch so many posts and if you select
"Open original page"
it will take you to the forum and make Mastodon and the fedi look nice!
I feel like NodeBB could be the next Mastodon!
It's amazing!
If you're using Mastodon through a computer, did you know you can access almost all of its functions through keyboard shortcuts? There's a complete list of shortcuts plus more info here:
Some of these will only make sense in Mastodon's multicolumn mode, but most of them work in all modes.
NOTE: You don't have to use any of these shortcuts, everthing can be done through the mouse too. The keyboard shortcuts are just for people who prefer them 🙂

Odd. Noticed that when viewing @mosseri from Mastodon his last post was on April 23, despite posting on Threads many times since and within the last 24 hours.
And if I follow him from here, his account doesn't show under my following list, despite indicating that I'm following on his profile.
Glitch? Intentional? How many other federated @threads accounts are like this? (Other threads.net accounts that I'm following seem okay.)
Does anyone know if there's any maintained Ruby library for the Mastodon API? The one I could find wasn't updated in like 5 years…
