After hearing feedback from people struggling with #Mastodon’s layout and navigation for a long time I’m really looking forward to these changes. And I’m really impressed with the work @imanijoy has put into researching user needs with surveys, interviews, and round tables. I feel like the community has never been so represented in the design process before. The screenshots are marked “in progress” for a reason though—it’s a process.

#Fedilab lets you fetch a remote conversation to retrieve all the messages your instance does not know about. This feature is limited by design, because the public context on the #Mastodon API is capped (40 ancestors and 60 descendants without authentication).
That is why the next Fedilab release will add a merge mode: the messages already known by your instance are merged with the remote ones. This way, the case where the feature worked against its own purpose can no longer happen.

So I usually hate sending over bluesky links anywhere since I'm not a fan, but Rob Ricci highlights some important distinctions between #activitypub and #atproto
Fundamentally, activitypub is designed to be useful with a partial view of the network. (Narrowing down to #mastodon here) Likes are communicated, mentions are communicated, and so on.
Over at atproto land, you have no option but to write to your repo, and so you have no choice but to view the entire network to say, find replies and such (narrowing to #bluesky here). So the only way you can get your data is to read the network and filter it yourself, or have someone else do it for you, which doesn't solve the problem, only shift it.
