The Captain

From this point of view as can be seen here, El Capitan stands in all its glory rising 3,000 feet above the valley floor. The gray granite seems to dominate the valley floor and from this perspective it does. But the river that cuts through the valley will lead you to many other places that try to also compete.

The Captain

You’re standing at the edge of Yosemite Valley, gazing upward at El Capitan, a colossal granite monolith that dominates the landscape like a stone cathedral. Its sheer vertical face rises with breathtaking force—smooth in places, jagged in others—etched with subtle striations from centuries of wind, ice, and sun. The rock glows faintly under a soft, overcast sky, its pale gray surface kissed by diffused light that makes the cliff feel both immense and ethereal.

Below, the Merced River gently winds through the valley, its surface rippling with motion and reflecting the muted tones of the sky. The water’s quiet murmur contrasts with the silent grandeur of the cliff above. On either side of the river, lush green trees—a mix of pine and deciduous—frame the scene with vibrant life. Their leaves rustle faintly, adding texture and movement to the stillness.

A stone lined before surrounded by trees with Autumn leaves. The leaves on the trees are a range of deep yellow to still green but threatening to change colors. There is a bit of cloudy sky visible framed by branches and foggy hills.

Here are two endemic #SandhillCranes that nest in our area. They do not migrate with their northern kin and are slightly smaller. At one point I was about ten feed away from them. 🙂

Starting a new thread with photos from #NineMileCanyon in #Utah.

This is one of the most concentrated collections of #RockArt in the US. Mostly pecked #Petroglyphs that are from 800 to 200 years old, with a few red painted #Pictographs mixed in.

Note there is a new problem with #vandalism to these important artifacts. 🙁 Everyone should work to protect them!
