Since 2020, Next Generation Internet (NGI) programmes, part of the European Commission's Horizon programme, fund free software in Europe using a cascade funding mechanism. This year, according to the Horizon Europe working draft detailing funding programmes for 2025, we notice that Next Generation Internet is not mentioned any more as part of Cluster 4.

It is a great selection of Free and Open Source projects covering the entire stack from open hardware to apps that improve user autonomy. Together they help to build the digital commons.

If you ever received a grant from any program in the Next Generation Internet initiative, you can request support services under the NGI0 Review program. The program ends on July 31 so the sooner you reach out the better. Use our webform and just tick the services that would benefit your project.

As NLnet transitions from #NGI to the Open Internet Stack (OIS), we'll temporarily pause our bimonthly open calls, with the exception of NGI Taler & Fediversity.
In order to take stock of a decade of the Next Generation Internet initiative, we'll halt our open calls. After the summer the regular application process will re-open with 3 new programs under the new #OIS umbrella. Ongoing projects can continue their important work uninterrupted.

On August 8, a new batch of 60 free and open source projects was selected for the NGI Zero Commons Fund. This is the outcome of the fund's 11th round.
