De maker van de lichtkoepel in het is Izaak (Isaac) Gosschalk (1838–1907), een vooraanstaand Nederlands architect en ingenieur uit Amsterdam. Hij ontwierp het huidige stationsgebouw, dat in 1896 werd voltooid.
Een belangrijke figuur in de Nederlandse architectuur van de late 19e eeuw en stond bekend als een vroege voorvechter van de herleving van de Hollandse Renaissance-stijl (1560–1630). Hij combineerde in zijn werken vaak elementen uit de neorenaissance en de neogotiek. De lichtkoepel, bekend als "Het Oog", is een kenmerkend art nouveau-ontwerp dat de zon voorstelt.
Naast het station in Groningen ontwierp Gosschalk onder meer:
De Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam (waarvan delen, zoals de watertoren, inmiddels gesloopt zijn).
Diverse synagogen.
Bierbrouwerijen en cafés.
Godsdienstbewaarscholen.
Vanwege zijn bijdrage aan deze stijl kreeg hij wel de bijnaam "architect van de Hollandse Renaissance". Hij was ook actief in het verenigingsleven, zo was hij voorzitter van de afdeling Amsterdam van de Maatschappij tot Bevordering der Bouwkunst en gemeenteraadslid in Amsterdam.

een van de perrons van Groningen Centraal Station, 2018 (lokaal ook wel Hoofdstation genoemd) is het belangrijkste spoorwegstation van de stad Groningen en de hoofdstad van de gelijknamige provincie in Nederland. Het station ligt op de kruising van drie spoorlijnen: Harlingen–Nieuweschans, Meppel–Groningen en Groningen–Delfzijl.
Het eerste stationsgebouw dateert uit 1865 maar werd in 1894 gesloopt. Het huidige, tweede gebouw werd ontworpen door architect Izaak Gosschalk, voltooid in 1896 en voor het laatst gerestaureerd in 2000. De treindiensten worden verzorgd door Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) en Arriva. Daarnaast is het station een groot knooppunt voor het busvervoer, met 41 buslijnen van vervoerder Qbuzz.
