Portsmouth is the only city in England not on the mainland, separated by Hilsea Moat. To the right in the picture you can see the M27 motorway on the mainland while Portsea Island and some of the new sea defences are on the left. There's been a lot of climate defence work around the coast over the past few years and some of the work here has included adding reed beds to trap nutrients and support the wetlands, and reduce salinity variations as this is sea water.

We're on a bridge over a river-like stretch of water about thirty metres wide that runs in almost straight line, practically calm, away from us. To the right there's raised land and a motorway running parallel to the water. To the left the land is a little lower with trees and grass set back beyond sea defences in the form of large boulders plus space set aside for cycling and walking paths. It has the look of something still under construction.

Photograph of a butterfly with folded wings, appearing almost black except for two circles at the ends of its wings, in the sun and resting on gray pavement. The butterfly’s shadow is projected in front of it, and its two antennae and the hairs of its body are clearly visible.

Black-and-white photograph taken in an industrial, former harbour area of Rotterdam. A large ship is moored by a pier. There are industrial buildings and containers near the pier and on the loading pier opposite. A barge is on the water heading in the direction of the sea. The skyline is filled with silhouettes of telecommunication poles, smokestacks, cranes and warehouses. The sun is lower on the horizon casting long shadows. Rotterdam, 25 September 2017. #SilentSunday #fields #countryside #fall #fallcolors #autumn #photography

Photograph of a rural landscape in autumn, showing a verdant hill descending the image obliquely from right to left, with small touches of yellow and orange here and there, and a maple tree already very red, contrasting almost at the center. At the bottom of the hill, fields with a beautiful bare golden soil, ready to be sown, separated from another very green field completely at the bottom of the photo by a border of shrubs. The blue sky occupies the upper half of the photo, with the moon almost full and white, just above the green hill.

The Island IX/IX.

Métis-sur-Mer, August 2026.

#SilentSunday #sea #seascape #island #sunset #beach #photography

Photograph of a sunset on the beach, showing a gradient of pastel colours, in shades of orange, yellow and blue, reflected on the calm, bluish sea. In the water, the black silhouette of a rocky island, some rocks and seabirds, the coast far behind on the left. In the foreground, a black silhouette of a person and two dogs, on the reddish shore that occupies the entire lower left corner of the image.
