Moved my carnivorous babies into the mudroom temporarily to protect them from the oncoming deluge, which is supposed to last all weekend into Monday. I'll move them back outside afterwards, as I want them to get as much sunlight as possible before they go into winter dormancy.

It’s all about pixels on the bird!

Long and or Zoom lenses are brilliant compensation for a lack of legs… when you can’t get closer to the subject. But you can’t beat nearness.

Here are three bird shots from today. The sparrow was right up close, the kestrel a hundred foot up, and the buzzard way up there. They’re all shot at 600mm but then cropped to roughly the same apparent size. The sparrow took almost no cropping at all, and the additional detail is clear.

Sparrow original crop 8205 x 5470 = 44.8 MPx

Kestrel original crop 2437 x 1624 = 4 MPx

Buzzard original crop 2419 x 1614 = 4 MPs and showing some optical distortion

Even at these reduced (1000 px long edge) resolution images it’s easy to see clarity cannot be cropped in. Get closer, when you can. But don’t climb electricity towers… 😉
