These photos are from last weekend. I provided a free Clay Play table for an event at the local skatepark. My husband’s a skateboarder & skatepark designer so I got linked in through his network. It was so sweet, fun and, best of all, relaxing. A few kids got hooked and stayed at the table for the entire four hours I was there. It’s incredible how #clay can captures kids’ attention in that way. #kidsart #pottery #ceramics

An abandoned pottery factory, somewhere in #France

The small French #pottery works thrived for decades. It remained modest, while competitors expanded and modernised. While this gives the #ruins a quaint charm, it was certainly a major factor in their closure!

Inside, the upper floors have long rows of wooden racks stacked with 100s of moulds. Heavy pieces were moved on wooden carts along a rail system.

#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 20: Meema's tulip bowl.

My grandmother (my Meema) painted a tulip bowl still life when she was 16; her painting now hangs in my home. I was admiring the bowl's shape and thought, "maybe I could make that!"

So here is my Meema's tulip bowl, brought to life.

I usually make things for people to use at home, but it seems to me that the only purpose of this bowl is to bob and spin in the Gulf.

Still warm from the kiln, covered in warm earth tones—I’m so relieved this piece came out successfully on the other side of firing. I worked on it over the course of a month and remembered to document moments of process which I think I’ll share in a thread.

The most important thing to know is that I consider this pot a collaboration. I coordinated the colors, but I didn’t choose them. Each clay tone was a surprise and a gift, and that’s where my excitement about this piece lies. #pottery

Me standing in my back yard holding a large pot in front of me with both hands. It borrows its spherical form from Nigerian water vessels and has a short, flared neck. It is about 16” (40cm) in diameter and 14” (36cm) in height.

The pot has been divided laterally into six parts and each section has been decorated with carved lines in alternating patterns: a symmetrical abstract leaf motif and a large double diamond pattern. The colors are dark brick red, olive green, dark purplish brown, dusky pink and aqua. The interior is glazed glossy aqua to reference the water this form would historically have contained.

Behind me is dense foliage and small blue patch of sky. I am smiling and wearing a black and white top and red paints, only partially visible from behind the large pot.

I’ve been making bedside water bottles for years but I don’t make them very often. They’re inspired by Mexican botellones—small clay water jugs with an accompanying cup which serves as a cover. Sometimes the cup has a handle. I’ve also discovered a Congolese version of the botellón. It’s such a simple and effective idea that it’s no surprise it would appear in multiple cultures. #pottery #ceramics #beautility

In 2020 I started having mild stability problems. If I'd had a cane the first time I fell down I would have been *much* better off. I tried some commercial ones but they turned out to be expensive, not durable, and very boring looking. So I figured out how to make my own from half inch copper pipe and porcelain. The picture shows what they look like, and this thread explains how to make them.

Materials:

* Type L half inch copper pipe -- this is the thick kind.

* Clay to make a top and a kiln to fire it in -- Probably other things will work for a top but this is what I use.

* Epoxy -- I've used both liquid and paste. They both work and each has its good and bad points.

* Masking tape.

* Half inch rubber cane tips.

Tools:

* Tube cutter -- it's really hard to cut copper pipe with a hacksaw!

* Tape measure

* Hacksaw -- Even if you have a tube cutter a hacksaw is still needed.

* Pliers

* Blue body with many light blue dots, each with a smaller green dot inside and a small depression where I pushed the clay in with a stick.

* White body with red and yellow dots and blue lozenge shapes. These shapes are all even with the white ball.

* Black body with a white eye that has a pink iris and a black pupil. There's a yellow eyebrow looking thing above it. This pattern is repeated on the back.

* Smooth white body with medium blue dots all over it. Again, the dots are flush with the body so it's nice and smooth.

* White body with cobalt blue patterns. The cobalt blue parts look like they bubbled up from the main ball. This is because I mixed a lot of cobalt oxide in with the porcelain and it reacted strangely but pleasantly in the kiln.

* White body with large pink dots. Each pink dot has a bunch of tiny black dots pressed into it.
