I find close up shots cause you to shift your focus form the entire scene to capturing details, and it's quite an interesting challenge to light and capture close up shots.
Close up shots require a better control over skin smoothing in editing. When applied too liberally it becomes really obvious and looks like plastic. A balance must be found that keeps minor imperfection details while cleaning up the overall photo.
