Today I built darktable 5.7 from source to try out the new AI features! I was especially curious about the new denoising models, both RAW and profile denoising.
I also freed ROCm (TheRock) from my chroot and set it up directly on my main system. And the ONNX Runtime actually built successfully!
The models are still running on the CPU for now, though. Darktable detects the GPU and the models are loaded into VRAM, but for some reason I haven't figured out yet, the actual computation still happens on the CPU.
The feature is still really new. The AI subsystem is optional at build time and even the Flatpak doesn't include the AI features yet. GPU acceleration requires a separate GPU-enabled ONNX Runtime.
The current AMD setup is aimed at ROCm 7 and RX 7000-series GPUs and newer.
And then there's my setup: the RX 6700 XT isn't officially supported by darktable's current MIGraphX setup and I'm running ROCm 10 on top of that.
So naturally I had to try it anyway.
What could possibly go wrong with an RX 6700 XT that isn't supported by either of them? xD
So far, the results from the models look really good! I'll be posting some photos from my DSLR soon, taken in the forest at high ISO, so they should be a good test for the new denoising models.
