THE ANIMALS WERE ALWAYS TALKING,
WE JUST COULDN'T HEAR THEM 💎
Here is some genuinely good news.
Scientists are using AI to find patterns in animal communication that humans have struggled to detect for a very long time.
Elephants appear to use individually specific calls, rather like names.
AI is revealing extraordinary structure in sperm whale clicks.
Researchers are developing systems that can analyse dolphin vocalisations and even generate dolphin-like sounds in return.
No, we have not yet built Google Translate for dolphins. Nobody is discussing fish with a porpoise over breakfast.
But something remarkable is beginning.
For most of human history, we assumed animals had relatively little to say because we couldn't understand what they were saying.
That assumption is becoming harder to maintain.
Perhaps the great breakthrough here will not be teaching animals to speak to us.
Perhaps it will be discovering that they have been communicating richly with one another all along, while we stood nearby, unable to hear them.
And I rather love the irony.
We built artificial intelligence partly to make machines think and talk more like us. But AI may end up helping humans become less deaf to everything that isn't us.
That seems like progress to me.

The video gets a little excited in places, but the underlying science is extraordinary:
