In California, solar panels on farms generates 25 times more revenue than crops. Solar panels on California's Central Valley farms generate an average of $124,000 per hectare annually, a lucrative practice that already powers 500,000 households while saving enough water for 27 million people a year. Some farmers are doubling up, growing shade-loving crops beneath panels or grazing livestock, creating wildlife habitat while maintaining food production.

Sudan and South Sudan have eliminated maternal and neonatal tetanus, a major milestone for maternal and child health in two countries mired in conflict. In Sudan, vaccination campaigns between 2016 and 2019 reached more than 3.5 million women in high-risk districts. Midwife training, prenatal care and community outreach did the rest of the work to get to elimination thresholds nationwide. Peru has permanently protected the Tijae-Río Nieva forest, upgrading around 300 km² in the Amazonas region to full national protected status on 26 July. The country’s 78th protected area shelters the Andean bear and the critically endangered yellow-tailed woolly monkey, which lives nowhere else on Earth. France has opened up €1 university meals to every student.
The subsidised three course meals, previously limited to low-income or financially vulnerable students, are now available regardless of income after a student union survey found almost half of French students had skipped meals for financial reasons. The policy cuts the standard €3.30 meal price by more than two-thirds. Water is returning to the African Sahel. After the catastrophic droughts of the late 20th century, aquifers from Senegal to Ethiopia are refilling, water tables in Niger have risen four metres, and Lake Chad has swollen to ten times its mid-1980s size. Near-extinct scimitar-horned oryx now number over 600, and farmers have nurtured 200 million trees back onto once-bare fields. Mountain lions are making American roads safer by frightening away deer. On Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, where cougars were most active, deer-vehicle collisions fell 76%. A cougar eats about 48 deer a year, nowhere near enough to account for it, so researchers have concluded that the deer are avoiding the places cats hunt. Deer kill up to 440 Americans a year; cougars have killed 29 Americans since 1868. https://news.mongabay.com/2026/08/cougars-cut-deadly-vehicle-deer-collisions-in-the-u-s-by-up-to-76-study-shows/

Viet Nam’s largest city is about to make buses free. Ho Chi Minh City, home to 14 million people, is preparing a $280 million annual plan to make all intra-city bus travel free, aiming to increase ridership by about 30% and reduce traffic and emissions. The policy builds on existing subsidies and a growing electric bus fleet. Aluminium used to build cars can now be reused to build…cars. A new alloy called RidgeAlloy turns contaminated scrap into strong structural vehicle parts. This solves a longstanding problem where recycled aluminium from mixed or dirty auto scrap was too weak for structural uses, closing a big loop in the automotive recycling chain. The tech could slash energy use and unlock huge supplies of domestic aluminium. Science Daily https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/03/260309225217.htm

Winona Minnesota's police department caved and won't be reinstalling their 8 Flock cameras after they were all mysteriously cut down.
Note that Flock would have replaced the cameras for free, so this is a pretty good "you can't even give it away" burn. 😂 😂 😂
The population of Winona is 26k.
In their surrender statement, WPD says they are prioritizing community trust.
Chinook salmon have recolonised 88% of their historic range on the Klamath River, with more than 13,000 fish passing the old Iron Gate Dam site in 2025, up from 7,700 the year before. A 300-million-year-old tree species declared extinct in the wild in the 1990s now numbers around 10,000 mature trees. China’s cliff cypress survives almost entirely in and around Chongqing’s Xuebaoshan reserve, the product of two decades of seed-banking and propagation work that just won an ecological restoration award in Geneva. Some of America’s biggest coal plants are becoming solar farms. Minnesota’s Sherburne County station, once the state’s largest coal burner, is now home to 1.7 million solar panels, reusing the old coal plant’s substation to cut a five-year grid-connection process to about one year; 1,500 sheep now graze between the rows. It’s not just Minnesota. In Texas, a 1.2 GW solar-and-battery project is now under construction on a former coal mine site. A University of Queensland-led team spent 24 days aboard the research vessel Investigator, pulling more than 20 sediment cores to reconstruct the coastal plain that existed before rising seas drowned it, working alongside Darumbal and Woppaburra Traditional Owners whose knowledge of the submerged country predates the science. https://oceanographicmagazine.com/news/researchers-map-ancient-world-beneath-southern-barrier-reef/

A Galápagos wildflower down to six plants in 2007 now has 28 growing in the wild, the product of 17 years of hand-propagation by the Charles Darwin Foundation. Researchers reintroduced 94 nursery-grown plants with a 100% survival rate and recorded the species’ first wild seedling in over a decade in 2021. Obviously the recovery is still fragile, and water scarcity remains the main threat. Nature Conservation https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1141314
