ISSA sits off-grid on the island of Vis: no roads, just a footpath. When we started there was no electricity, no water mains, and only a weak mobile signal.
⟟ Two years ago, with ISSA festival participants, we walked the hill with a big wifi antenna on a stick, hunting for 4G. ISSA itself is in a blind spot. ☀
Last year solar went up, giving us stable electricity, plus a rainwater system with a fog catcher.
⏻ This year we finally got online: a 4G solar-powered router 300 m below ISSA, relaying the signal uphill ↑ to the library. At the library, a solar-powered mini computer ▤ is waiting to join the Solar Protocol, a planetary network of solar-powered web servers run by artists Tega Brain, Alex Nathanson and Benedetta Piantella.
☀ → ☾ → ☀ Our server only runs when the sun shines; when it goes dark, another node in sunlight takes over. Every request is routed to wherever on the planet has the most light. Our little island is now part of a network that runs on weather.
