TOPIC> Clouds
"Dear dev-ops and admins, who are mostly overworked and close to burnout: DON'T PANIC!
These clouds have nothing to do with your work, but quite the opposite, they are supposed to lead you back to the original meaning of the word. So scroll calmly through this thread and let yourself fall into deep relaxation until your state of mind corresponds to a small pink fluffy cloud and breathe serenely in and out again .. in and out .. and now let the clouds in your mind just come and go .. come and go .."

Explanation:
When do cloud bottoms appear like bubbles? Normally, cloud bottoms are flat. This is because moist warm air that rises and cools will condense into water droplets at a specific temperature, which usually corresponds to a very specific height. As water droplets grow, an opaque cloud forms. Under some conditions, however, cloud pockets can develop that contain large droplets of water or ice that fall into clear air as they evaporate. Such pockets may occur in turbulent air near a thunderstorm. Resulting mammatus clouds can appear especially dramatic if sunlit from the side. The mammatus clouds pictured here, lasting only a few minutes, were photographed over Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, just after a storm in 2012.

this is why I don't cope with hot #UK #weather, not only is it #hot,
if we have 4 days of sun, it never gets cool for at least 4 days.
outside is hot all day, inside is hot all day and all night!!
there's no relief!
hottest #temperature during the day before 28°c
at 1 AM
outside 19°c with a low of 15°c at 4 AM
(kitchen not living room, preemptive HA moving update)
inside 24°c and was pretty much 23°c all night
with a massive low of 23.5°c at 7 am.
just before it started to heat up again.
We Sat on the Porxh - a bit of something for #ThrowBackThursday - a night when my husband and I sat on the porch one evening at a restaurant in the pouring rain. It was quite lovely...

I have just rolled out a configuration change across the entire FediMeteo network.
I've enabled remote purge propagation. Since weather forecasts have a short shelf life, there is no need for old reports to take up space on your servers.
From now on, when FediMeteo deletes local posts (usually after 14 (was 3) days), we will also send a deletion signal to the rest of the Fediverse. This helps keep your timelines clean and your storage usage low.

Exactly one year ago, on 30th December 2024, I laid the foundation of FediMeteo.
I took a VM, installed FreeBSD, and set up the first jail to support Italy. The goal was to create a tool for my own use, support a few countries, and announce it.
Unexpectedly, the enthusiasm was incredible. That pushed me to keep going, support more countries and cities, and turn it into what it is today.
FediMeteo now supports 38 countries and 2,937 cities, with more than 7,700 followers in the Fediverse alone, not counting the many people who follow via RSS feeds or visit the web pages.
If you are curious to read the story and some technical details, you can find it here:

Today is also Tuesday, a #ThankYouTuesday, so I want to say thanks to:
* OpenMeteo - @openmeteo - for providing accurate, high quality data, without which FediMeteo would be far less useful
* @grunfink - creator of snac, who made all of this possible using very few resources, on a 4 euro per month VM
* FreeBSD, which thanks to the efficiency of the OS and its jail implementation made it possible to run this service in a stable and efficient way with minimal effort
* FediFollows - @FediFollows - that periodically spreads the word about cities, countries, and the enthusiasm around the project
*All of you*, who suggested, encouraged, corrected, and celebrated this project
And forward toward supporting more countries and other interesting features already in the works.
Happy birthday, FediMeteo! 🎉

Across hundreds of Alaskan communities, public schools are often the safest buildings where people can take shelter during disasters.
After decades of state neglect, however, some have become emergencies themselves.

At least 11 people died and more than 1,400 residents sought emergency care for carbon monoxide poisonings during the 2021 winter storm in Texas.
Here’s what you should know about keeping your family and home safe, especially during power outages.

On the bright side, lately I've been doing a lot of informal thinking while shoveling snow. I'm turning over an informal argument grounded on Chaitin incompleteness that if our physical universe has continuous space-time, then we must make non-computable leaps in our theories in order to increase the fidelity of our understanding. "Artificial scientists" running on computers will always have inescapable limits that don't apply to human beings. It's exactly the sort of wacky thing that makes for good shovel thinking: it passes the time, and there might be something in there that's more than passing theoretical fancy.

I guess I'll be doing some insulating. This is the longest, coldest cold snap I've experienced here and the bright side of it is that it's alerted me to a trouble spot as well as the limits of our current systems!

From now on, forecasts are richer, clearer, and a bit smarter, without losing the familiar, readable style.
You will now see more complete current conditions at a glance: feels-like temperature, humidity, pressure, visibility, UV index, and wind gusts, all grouped in a dedicated Details section. Sunrise and sunset times for the current day are also included.
The wind line is back in focus, clearly highlighted for current conditions, and gusts are shown separately using 💨 emoji so they are easy to spot and not confused with average wind.
Pressure is no longer just a number: FediMeteo now shows a real pressure trend over the last few hours, telling you if it is rising, falling, or staying stable.
A new Warnings section has been added. When relevant, the bot will automatically flag things like:
extreme feels-like temperatures, hot or cold
high UV levels
poor air quality
thunderstorms
heavy rain likely
strong winds or gusts
Everything is fully localised. Labels like “feels like”, section titles, and weather descriptions are consistent across languages, and all weather conditions are now covered everywhere.
In short: same FediMeteo you are used to, but with more context, clearer signals, and fewer surprises.
These changes will start appearing with the next forecast update.
