yo #webdev homies, any tips for EU services where I can spin up nodejs servers quickly like on heroku?

My first ever little web app is live!
Trackmbta.app is a web app that can be "installed" on mobile devices. Like its name, it tracks MBTA trains so you can be smarter for your trips!
Features are:
- Live count down
- Live location of trains on the map (just in case you're curious where that damn train is that you're waiting forever...)
- Save your favorite stations locally for quick access
This web app cuts all the bullshit:
- No permission asked
- No data collected from you
If you are a red line commuter and see a ✨ on the app, you probably already know what it means! Those shiny new trains!

Try it and let me know what you think!

#FediAlgo (the customizable timeline algorithm / filtering system for your Mastodon feed) v1.2.2 is deployed now. Has a switch that makes sure any #hashtags / users / etc. that you follow are displayed as filter options even if they don't meet the minimum number of recent toots threshold.
Also a bunch of bug fixes and small improvements.

My Actual #smallweb kitten experience.
https://screwlisp.small-web.org/kitten/actual-kitten-experience/
What I discovered is that #webdev -ing an article "properly" which is to say using all the features your framework provides (i.e. https://kitten.small-web.org/ ) absorbs an absolute ton of extra work. Comparable to being formal in mathematics. I am interested in how that extra work exposes my own articles to me better later.
I also propose FIPA SL's extension to #ISO8601 as a general time format in #commonLisp . cc @aral
#Website designers and developers who redesign or update sites WITHOUT creating broken links are among our tech heroes!
Why? Updating broken links is very time-consuming, and it is NOT our favorite website maintenance task!
If you can volunteer some hours to help fix broken links in https://bit.ly/SkillsSafetyLaws (e.g., we just updated broken links to City of Marina municipal code, which we discovered while looking up sidewalk info for a teen this eve ) or elsewhere on our site, please contact us https://bikemonterey.org/contact-me.
And if you just want to report a broken link, https://bikemonterey.org/using-this-site/be-a-community-reviewer.
Also note: We still need a Ruby on Rails expert to volunteer for https://bikemonterey.org/boosting-small-businesses-via-discounts-for-people-who-bike-e-g-the-her-helmet-thursdays-project.html.
Muchas gracias.

Modern #CSS code snippets, side by side with the old hacks they replace.
"Stop writing CSS like it's 2015."
This is a question made for Mastodon: If I want to learn how to make a wiki with an attached forum, where should I start? At the moment I only know basic HTML and CSS.
If possible I'd also like to self host it.
🎷🦣 Mastoshare update — improved set instance page UX.
Now it shows buttons for popular instances and a drop-down for known instances (using @fedidb)
Set your home instance now, so mastoshare links will open seamlessly — https://mastoshare.link/set-instance?next=home

🚩✊ Friday is Dependency Deletion Day! Today on the chopping block: rimraf (103,000,000 downloads/week). Unless your Node.js version is from the Cretaceous, rimraf delegates to fs.rm under the hood anyway, so you might as well just skip the middleman. Free your node_modules, use fs.rm!

In related news! I am now open to contract, part-time, or full-time work dealing with web (or app) development: frontend, some backend, and design. Please be gentle with me as I haven't worked in a standard corporate setting or have standardized schooling, but I hope you could consider me for remote work in junior (or other) roles.
I am in GMT-6 or Central Standard Time.
Here is my CV: https://misnina.neocities.org/misnina_anon_CV_2026.pdf
(I hope you enjoy how aggressively feminine it is)
Since it is now basically impossible to use any libraries/tools in the mainstream web development ecosystem without depending on some amount of LLM-generated code, I am now seriously considering creating an alternative web development ecosystem that is explicitly made without LLMs.
Would anyone be interested in that sort of thing?
How the @#$% does #Hugo (static website generator) work with Github? Hundreds of pages reference #github but I still can't find how that works. Almost every Hugo help site says "add this reference to [a? your?] github repo..." but don't explain what the heck is happening or why I need that... why do I need a github repo to have a website somewhere else?
Clearly I don't need it; I have a hugo site up and running, and at no point was github involved.... except nothing would work until I initalized (?) my hugo directory (or the executable? IDK) on my webhost's server using a git command. For some reason.
I seriously don't understand why (or, more importantly, how) Hugo needs github. Right now dozens or hundreds of help sites seem like they're telling me that I need to have a shrine to my cat in my neighbor's house or else my blender won't work.
Lots of references to using github submodules and plenty of people saying "No! You fool! Don't do that!" and other people saying "Ackshully you should make your website a github module." Then other sites (including Hugo's official site) saying I should make my website into a #go module somehow for some reason... and I can't do that unless I have a github repo somewhere? Which is also maybe a Go module? Yet more sites saying I don't need to do that if I use some fancy scripts to fool something (my Hugo installation? My github repo? IDK) into thinking my Hugo site is or has a github repo...
If anyone would like to explain this to me like I'm literally 12 years old I'm very open to this. Every help site I've seen for weeks just assumes I understand some basic things that I don't remotely understand, like what the connection is between Hugo and github, how important it is, how it works, etc.
Understanding that I already have a functioning Hugo site, but apparently still need a github repo (maybe?) to do anything more interesting with it.
I know I'm using Mastodon as tech support a lot lately, but honestly y'all are more helpful than most search engines for some things.
Edit: Thanks for all the support, everyone! I’m good to go for now.
I’m looking for some help in moving my Etsy shop over to a Wordpress/WooCommerce site that I fully own and manage.
I would like to hire a developer to help me along the way, as a consultant.
If you — or someone you know and trust — would be interested, please send me a DM. I’m in Canada 🇨🇦
If you’d like to see what I’m going to be working on, my Etsy shop is at https://brittbuilds3d.etsy.com
Thank you! Boosts appreciated!

Y’hear that rumbling? Feel it? That's the seismic shift which just happened, because today…
The Bridgetown #Ruby #WebDev framework just launched our first first-party theme. 🤯
Introducing Willamette.
It's a feature-filled, highly-customizable, “from the creators who brought you Bridgetown” website theme designed initially for text-based web publishing…but we’re just getting started! 🥳
Read all the deets, try out the public beta, and let us know what you think.

Re: flat web design.
Buttons that don’t look like buttons.
I blew someone’s mind today. She’s about my age, competent at her job, but not much into technology.
She complained that she always needs to scroll past the weeks in her web-based calendar.
I pressed the current date shown in the top-left corner above her appointments, which pulled up a big date overview by month.
She was so excited, asked me how I did that.
Mind you, the date was shown as simple black letters on a white background, with only a black, downwards-pointing chevron a bit to the right. It hardly suggested interactivity, especially to those not knowledgeable about web design.
I often think that flat design was a mistake, and today’s situation was a good example of bad user experience (UX) stemming from non-intuitive controls.
📝 Owning your data #Development #Webdev #Tech #SocialMedia
Owning your own data is hard. I've been trying to own as much as I can, and my site has become a reflection of that process, both in what I display and discuss. As difficult as it is, there's a freedom in owning as much as you can.
I published a DRAFT of “My TiddlyWiki Customizations ⛮ (Vim key bindings, journaling, and more)”

🎷🦣 Mastoshare update — future of Mastoshare
Mastodon recently put a service that covers some Mastoshare functionality — sharing posts.
https://mastodon.social/@Mastodon/116160846932470950
What that means for Mastoshare? Mastoshare was never about money, but with a goal of making better UX of Mastodon. I believe semi-centralized solution is the right way, as it has network effect — the more people use one website the easier it is for everyone.

Hey guys, you read my troubles with developing an ActivityPub / Mastodon multibot instance yesterday? Well, I got it working in the end and have already migrated four bots and added another two to it.
And here is the code that I open source now:
