For over a century, voting has been a surprisingly common political activity in China. Voting as a Rite examines China’s experiments with elections from the perspective of intellectual and cultural history. Rather than arguing that such exercises were either successful or failed attempts at political democracy, the book instead focuses on a previously unasked question: how did those who participated in Chinese elections define success or failure for themselves? Answering this question reveals why Chinese elites originally became enamored of elections at the end of the nineteenth century, why critics complained about elections that featured real competition in the early twentieth century, and why elections continued to be held after the mid-twentieth century even though outcomes were predetermined by the state. While no mainland Chinese government has ever felt that its rule required validation at the ballot box, the discourses that surrounded elections reveal much about important tensions within modern Chinese political thought. What is the best means to identify talent? Can the state trust the people to act responsibly as citizens? As Joshua Hill shows, elections are vital, not peripheral, to understanding these concerns fully.

《佛教对中国物质文化的影响》是美国斯坦福大学宗教研究系教授柯嘉豪的一本重要学术著作,在西方中国宗教研究领域具有相当重要的意义。此书详细分析了佛教对中国物质文化的影响,包括对中国建筑、衣着、家具以及饮食的贡献。在此书之前,西方学者撰写中国通史时,除了提到佛教在思想、信仰以及仪式等方面的激荡外,很少强调佛教曾影响中国的物质文化;同时,也很少留意佛教的流传与物质文化间的关系。而对于中国读者来说,从一个较宏观的角度来讨论佛教对中国物质文化的影响,促使其思索宗教物品在其信仰与生活中所扮演的角色,仍具有新颖的启发意义。

作者自言“此书主要是为西方读者写的,所以其中恐怕有不少内容对中国读者而言是十分普通的常识”,可以看出书的确是普及向的,比较专注介绍已有成果(糖这一部分,不知道为什么不用季羡林的《糖史》),总体看起来各个点有些东鳞西爪,没有深刻的贯穿性的指导思想,新的研究成果(作者用二手材料多)。当然这也许与作者最终得出“佛教与中国物质文化弱相关”的结论,以及“佛教传入中国的过程长达数百年,并非井井有条,也不存在什么规划”的这些观点有关。

Where does Neo-Confucianism - a movement that from the twelfth to the seventeenth centuries profoundly influenced the way people understood the world and responded to it - fit into our story of China's history?This interpretive, at times polemical, inquiry into the Neo-Confucian engagement with the literati as the social and political elite, local society, and the imperial state during the Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties is also a reflection on the role of the middle period in China's history. The book argues that as Neo-Confucians put their philosophy of learning into practice in local society, they justified a new social ideal in which society at the local level was led by the literati with state recognition and support. The later imperial order, in which the state accepted local elite leadership as necessary to its own existence, survived even after Neo-Confucianism lost its hold on the center of intellectual culture in the seventeenth century but continued as the foundation of local education. It is the contention of this book that Neo-Confucianism made that order possible.

《文化、权力与国家》是以乡村的文化网络为基本结构并考察其功能,这一点和作者第二本书《从国族中拯救历史》(中译本即出)的结构形态似乎相差不少,但他所关注的主题却在继续延伸:现代国家如何构造新的文化,以及民间团体如何“抵抗”从上面来的“攻击”,是第二本书所讨论的一个主要问题。
最重要的一点是,作者在他的著述里贯穿了一种方法论:在考虑话语—主体—制度这三者对历史的建构时应该加入许多外来事物和偶然因素,因为参与主体和主体性构成的不仅有话语,还有外来事物;而由主体构建的制度还应包括制度本身的逻辑和偶然性。因此,所谓“拯救历史”其实是一个方法的问题,而不是一个带有实体的目的。作者认为当民族国家成为现代性之下的历史主体时,其它历史就没有了,因为写历史的不同方法带有不同的目的性——以民族国家为对象的历史自然会排除掉其他可能的历史。所以,他从民族国家中要拯救的不是某种实体,而是一种方法,这种方法表明,我们本来就应该有许多种历史,它们是交织在一起的。对杜赞奇这样的研究者来讲,他最关注的就是在民族国家之外的历史是如何被压下去的,乡村仍然是他的立场。

Ethnic Identity in Tang China is the first work in any language to explore comprehensively the construction of ethnicity during the dynasty that reigned over China for roughly three centuries, from 618 to 907. Often viewed as one of the most cosmopolitan regimes in China's past, the Tang had roots in Inner Asia, and its rulers continued to have complex relationships with a population that included Turks, Tibetans, Japanese, Koreans, Southeast Asians, Persians, and Arabs.
Marc S. Abramson's rich portrait of this complex, multiethnic empire draws on political writings, religious texts, and other cultural artifacts, as well as comparative examples from other empires and frontiers. Abramson argues that various constituencies, ranging from Confucian elites to Buddhist monks to "barbarian" generals, sought to define ethnic boundaries for various reasons but often in part out of discomfort with the ambiguity of their own ethnic and cultural identity. The Tang court, meanwhile, alternately sought to absorb some alien populations to preserve the empire's integrity while seeking to preserve the ethnic distinctiveness of other groups whose particular skills it valued. Abramson demonstrates how the Tang era marked a key shift in definitions of China and the Chinese people, a shift that ultimately laid the foundation for the emergence of the modern Chinese nation.
