《方桂与我五十五年(增订本)》内容简介：读了徐樱姊的书稿，感慨万千。方桂比我大九岁，但我们可说是同时代的人。我们的历程，相同处实在很多。我们都经过了历史上未有的变化，我们都想从学术贡献于国家的现代化，我们都经过了关系国家存亡的抗日战争。一生播迁，弦歌未辍，我们都是幸运的人。
早在清华读书的时候，就听见了方桂的名字，知道他是一个杰出的青年语言学家。国学主张“读书必先识字”，所以文字学，那时叫作小学，是国学的一重要部分。等到方桂同赵元任先生等把范围扩充到语言，利用近代的方法，就奠定了中国语言学的基础。这是中国学术史上的一件大事。
三十年代方桂曾获中央研究院的杨铨奖。那时中研院有两个全国性的奖：人文科学的杨铨奖和自然科学的丁文江奖，是国家最重要的学术奖，当事者无意续办，便都削减了。在方桂以后，我曾获丁文江奖，所以我们可说有“同榜之雅”。
我们初见大约在五十年代在芝加哥。那时我在芝大教书，方桂来教一个夏季。一见如旧识，两家相聚为欢。方桂寡言，樱姊热诚，我们对事的看法，有不少相同之处。
