Il n'est pas donné à tous de pouvoir passer du monde qui s'ouvre sous la page à celui des profits et pertes, et retour, imperturbable, comme entre le turbin et le Café du Commerce.
Je ne sais pas plus sur cette pièce que celui qui arrive à la lire avec attention.
Je ne sais pas dans quel esprit je l'ai écrite.
Je ne sais pas plus sur les personnages que ce qu'ils disent, ce qu'ils font et ce qui leur arrive. De leur aspect j'ai dû indiquer le peu que j'ai pu entrevoir. Les chapeaux melon par exemple.
Je ne sais pas qui est Godot. Je ne sais même pas, surtout pas, s'il existe. Et je ne sais pas s'ils y croient ou non, les deux qui l'attendent.
Les deux autres qui passent vers la fin de chacun des deux actes, ça doit être pour rompre la monotonie.
Tout ce que j'ai pu savoir, je l'ai montré. Ce n'est pas beaucoup. Mais ça me suffit, et largement. Je dirai même que je me serais contenté de moins.
Quant à vouloir trouver à tout cela un sens plus large et plus élevé, à emporter après le spectacle, avec le programme et les esquimaux, je suis incapable d'en voir l'intérêt. Mais ce doit être possible.
Je n'y suis plus et je n'y serai plus jamais. Estragon, Vladimir, Pozzo, Lucky, leur temps et leur espace, je n'ai pu les connaître un peu que très loin du besoin de comprendre. Ils vous doivent des comptes peut-être. Qu'ils se débrouillent. Sans moi. Eux et moi nous sommes quittes ».

第一幕
故事从1815年的土伦监狱开始，苦役犯在唱着劳作之歌（Work Song）。第24601号囚犯冉阿让仅仅因为救自己快饿死的两个外甥而偷了一块面包，度过了19年的苦役生涯，得到假释以后，被人排斥歧视，只有第涅的主教开门接纳他。但内心充满对世界愤恨的冉阿让偷了主教的银餐具。当他准备远走高飞之际，被警察发现，主教却告诉警察，那是他送给冉阿让的（Valjean Arrested， Valjean Forgiven）。主教的慈悲与宽恕使冉阿让深感震动，决定重新做人（What Have I Done? ）。
1823年，更名为马德兰的冉阿让，已经是海滨蒙特勒伊市一所大工厂的厂主，还被任命为市长。他的工厂中有位名叫芳汀的女工，被情人抛弃，将女儿托付给人抚养，妒忌她的女工鼓动工头将她解雇（At The End of the Day - I Dreamed a Dream）。为了支付女儿的抚养费，芳汀买掉了自己的饰物与头发，最后沦为妓女（Lovely Ladies）。一天，芳汀与一个想占她的便宜的花花公子扭打起来。警察沙威不问缘由就要把她送进监牢。此时冉阿让出现，要求立即把她送往医院（Fantine's Arrest）。

在孟费郿，芳汀的女儿小珂赛特在德纳第夫妇家中备受虐待，却仍然充满天真的幻想。（Castle on a Cloud），这对夫妇开着一家酒馆，粗俗而贪婪（Master of the House），冉阿让来到酒馆，付给德纳第夫妇一笔钱，把小珂赛特带到巴黎抚养长大（The Bargain - Waltz of Treachery）。
时光流逝，已是1832年的巴黎。巴黎街头充满了贫困、动荡与不安（Look Down）。一个偶然的机会，年轻学生马吕斯碰上了已长大成人的珂赛特，一见钟情（The Robbery）。一直追捕冉阿让的沙威也来到巴黎，誓言要将冉阿让追捕归案（Stars）。而这时，倍受人民爱戴的拉马克将军逝世，这使安灼拉和他的一群学生朋友们看到了革命胜利的希望（The ABC Cafe - Red and Black－Do You Hear the People Sing?）。

起义的学生筑起街垒，爱潘妮追随马吕斯来到了街垒，马吕斯让她送信给珂赛特，以使她离开危险的街垒。（At the Barricade）。但爱潘妮只见到了冉阿让，请他将信转交，然后独自徜徉在巴黎街头，幻想马吕斯的爱（On My Own）。沙威混进学生的队伍想要破坏他们的计划，却被机灵的流浪儿伽弗洛什识破身份（Little People）。爱潘妮重回街垒，却身受枪伤，死在马吕斯的怀里（A Little Fall of Rain）。冉阿让读了马吕斯的信，来到街垒参加战斗。由于他的英勇表现，安灼拉要报答他。冉阿让请求将沙威交给他处置，并瞒着众人放走了沙威（First Attack）。在战争的间隙中，众人饮酒唱歌，各怀心事（Drink With Me），冉阿让望着熟睡的马吕斯，为他祈祷（Bring Him Home）。次日，第二轮战斗开始。伽弗洛什跑出街垒寻找弹药，不幸中枪牺牲（The Second Attack－Death of Gavroche）。
在最后一轮战斗中，除了冉阿让和身受重伤的马吕斯幸免于难之外，起义者们全部牺牲（The Final Battle）。冉阿让背着马吕斯从下水道逃走，中途遇上了以盗尸为生的德纳第，他偷走了马吕斯的戒指和表（The Sewers— Dog Eats Dog）。在下水道出口，冉阿让碰上了沙威，请求沙威允许他把这个受伤的青年送回家，然后就可以任其处置。沙威同意了。但这时的沙威已经陷入了矛盾，他既无法接受自己被一个苦役犯所救的事实，也无法接受自己居然“善恶难辨”，最后投塞纳河自杀身亡（Javert's Suicide）。
战斗结束，但是世界似乎并没有改变（Turning），幸存的马吕斯沉浸在对朋友的追忆中（Empty Chairs at Empty Tables）。与此同时，在珂赛特日夜照料下，马吕斯日渐康复，但不知到底是谁救了自己（Every Day）。在珂赛特与马吕斯的婚礼前，冉阿让主动向马吕斯坦白自己的过去，希望他能为自己保密，不要告诉珂赛特让她伤心。马吕斯听后大惊失色，默许了冉阿让离开的提议（Valjean's Confession）。
在婚礼宴席上，德纳第不请自来，拿出戒指和表作为“证据”证明冉阿让是杀人犯，意图敲诈。马吕斯这才知道救命恩人正是冉阿让！他立即带着珂赛特赶往冉阿让的住处（The Wedding - Beggars at the Feast）。但是冉阿让已经快要死了（Epilogue）。最后，在亲人的陪伴下，冉阿让跟着芳汀、爱潘妮和所有牺牲的学生一起离开人间……（Finale）
