在2011年12月的任天堂的网络发布会上，任天堂社长岩田聪正式公布了本作并确定本作将是火焰之纹章系列的原创游戏，而非像系列之前在任天堂DS平台上发售的两作复刻作品。《觉醒》不但将加入新游戏要素，也会继承保留前作的元素。据《日本日经新闻》报道，本作将是首个拥有付费追加下载内容的火焰之纹章系列作品[3]。
