2019 年的香港，夜晚依然美麗，如常的生活景象卻似乎正逐漸變調。蔡明亮走在銅鑼灣街上，用鏡頭記錄下城市的脈動與氣息，還有一座天橋。一首老歌在他耳邊迴盪著：「良夜不能留，只為不願人兒走，恨歡樂時太短，才相見又要分手。」
本片也是蔡明亮自2017年VR《家在蘭若寺》、2018年紀錄片《你的臉》與2019年《不散》（4K修復版）之後，再次有作品於威尼斯舉辦世界首映。

In Hong Kong, echoes of resistance and turmoil are sensitively captured on 16mm in this poetic rumination of public spaces and everyday life in a metropolis in upheaval.

Tugging Diary documents a footbridge over a year between August 2019 to January 2021. Due to social unrest and the uncertainty of various immediate happenings, both the internet and physical spaces act as critical communication platforms of its own during this period. As such, information can be circulated in the community more widely and rapidly outside of the existing mainstream media. As time goes by, these materials are continuously altered, some were renewed, while the others were removed, covered with paint, or overlaid by other information.

People in a red-brick-walled compound are barricaded by a group of mysterious men who threaten those in the compound day and night, telling them not to escape and act as if everything is normal. The people inside muse on the drastic changes in their lives, as their limits are constantly being tested and pushed. Some risk their lives trying to escape, while others lose their will and dwell in the surreal realm between dream and reality.

Based on a true incident in 2019 when a notorious pro-Beijing Hong Kong politician openly displayed his camaraderie with the triad goons who attacked peaceful protestors. Wong's sophisticated, compact drama goes beyond agitprop and grapples with complexities and tensions in the movement.
