本书为阿根廷诗人、小说家、评论家、翻译家，西班牙语文学大师博尔赫斯的短篇小说集代表作，包括《小径分岔的花园》与《杜撰集》两部十六篇小说，1944年，博尔赫斯将这些篇目统以《虚构集》为名正式出版。博尔赫斯直接以“虚构”命名他的标志性作品，也是博尔赫斯最终确定的《小径分岔的花园》版本形式。
1941年问世的《小径分岔的花园》，是博尔赫斯最广为人知的小说，“小说—花园—时间—迷宫”的脉络第一次出现在博尔赫斯笔下，并成为其艺术的关键词。对时间或平行或背离或汇合或交错的不同序列的理解融入写作，无穷的可能性由此而生。
《杜撰集》延续虚构的传奇故事题材，小说集中有作者“最得意的故事”《南方》，被视为博尔赫斯写作的转折点。主人公布宜诺斯艾利斯市立图书馆的秘书达尔曼在上楼时前额莫名地被什么东西刮破，竟至高烧不已，噩梦不断，住进了疗养院，病情好转后他决定回祖辈留下的南方庄园休养，他一路坐出租马车、乘火车、步行，最后临时起意走进一家杂货铺吃饭，却卷入一场决斗，死在对手刀下。这个故事在博尔赫斯的语言迷宫里，又有另外的读法：达尔曼没有死，回南方庄园的旅程其实是他躺在病床上做的梦，他在梦中死于决斗，一个庸常生活中的人在梦中选择了他所向往的轰轰烈烈的死亡方式。自此，彻底取消现实与虚构的二元对立成为博尔赫斯最惯常的写作手法。

What's the best way to create artificial intelligence? In 1950, Alan Turing wrote, 'Many people think that a very abstract activity, like the playing of chess, would be best. It can also be maintained that it is best to provide the machine with the best sense organs that money can buy, and then teach it to understand and speak English. This process could follow the normal teaching of a child. Things would be pointed out and named, etc. Again I do not know what the right answer is, but I think both approaches should be tried.'
The first approach has been tried many times in both science fiction and reality.
