从大陆撤到台湾的一批将士及其亲属中，有一个来自河南的大家庭。除了将军的跟班福顺和姥姥（陶述 饰）中意的那副齐白石的柿子图意外走散，家里人口总算齐全的到达了台湾。
换了一个新地方，姥姥各种不适应，被将军女婿（石隽 饰）许诺不久就能重返老家。但随着时间的推移，这个问题很少再被提及。横在一家人面前的是生活的难题。家里小孩众多，物资匮乏，但点子颇多的姥姥常常化腐朽为神奇。像是把女婿照的X光片裁成多份做写字板；跟教堂的修女弄好关系得到面粉牛奶；把女婿的锦旗做成孩子们校运会的旗帜等，过程中惹出不少笑话。而没了官职的将军则和妻子倒弄起养殖业，鸡鸭青蛙鱼轮番上阵，还卖过铅笔，但都没能赚到钱。日子就这么平平淡淡过去，孙辈渐渐长大，而福顺（赵正平 饰）意外地和这家人再次相遇，带来了姥姥的那副柿子图及那份不曾离去的乡愁。

如果把拍电影比喻成下棋，大多数人在做的是如何把每一步棋走得比别人高明，而我想做的是把棋子下到棋盘的外面。

导演简介
李红旗，1976年生于山东，1995年毕业于山东滨州教育学院美术系，1999年结业于中央美术学院油画系。1999年开始发表、出版小说及诗歌作品，代表作有长篇小说《幸运儿》、《我感到浑身有使不完的劲》，诗集《临床经验》。
2004年导演剧情片处女作《好多大米》，获58届瑞士洛迦诺国际电影节NETPAC奖。2008年完成第二部剧情片《黄金周》,获第52届伦敦电影节国际影评人奖提名。2010年完成第三部剧情片《寒假》，获第63届洛迦诺电影节金豹奖、国际影评人奖、基督教联盟特别奖。

1986 Chinese film

An American attorney on business in China, ends up wrongfully on trial for murder and his only key to innocence is a female defense lawyer from the country.

A prostitute from the Northeast, desperate and unable to make ends meet, abandons her baby. An unemployed factory worker decides to take the child for the 200 yuan (about $37 Canadian) a month in child support promised by its mother. His early attempts at child-rearing are somewhat painful to watch, but also charming and amusing. Eventually, he and the mother become friendly and it seems that the child will be raised in a sweetly unorthodox family. However, when the woman's pimp, a local gangster, not only finds out that he may have fathered the child, but also that he is dying of cancer, he decides that he must adopt the baby - and is willing to resort to violence if necessary.

Zhang Xiaomei (Jin Zi), is a prostitute living in Beijing. When relationship problems with her boyfriend erupt, she flees to the resort city of Beidaihe and takes a room in a small hotel where she contemplates committing suicide. There she meets a young poet. The next morning, she wakes and learns that the poet has slit his wrists. When the police arrive, she meets Deng Jianguo (Cheng Taisheng), a middle-aged officer who questions her over the poet's death. Their relationship soon grows increasingly complicated as Deng learns of Xiaomei's plans to commit suicide. Over the course of several days, he takes her to eat seafood dinners, extolling the virtues and health benefits of the diet, including a claim that it makes him a more potent lover. When Xiaomei tries to commit suicide in a nearby town, she is thwarted by Deng who brings her back to Beidaihe and proceeds to rape her. Xiaomei eventually leaves the seaside town for Beijing again.
