"Nadja a Paris," a short film from Eric Rohmer, tells the story of a Yugoslavian-born girl (who was adopted by an American family, who goes to study at the Cite Universitaire in Paris. The character development, considering the brevity of the film, is pretty good, but overall, the film doesn't pack much of a punch at all. Rohmer's other films tend to have an overlying meaning (or "point"), often in a moral lesson. This short is basically a love letter to Paris. "We'll always have Paris." Some sixty years after the "Controversial Discussions" in the early 40s, this passionate book resurrects their spirit on a global scale. Under the aurthor's generous, tactful yet strong leadership, a small discussion group of noteworthy analysts of the International Psychoanalytical Association, coming from all the theoretical and geographical regions in today's psychoanalytic Babel, met several times over three years in order to deal, by way of the detailed discussion of their clinical experiences, with what to many of those involved was and still is a polemical concept: that of the borderline patient. This is the first English translation of Le Travail du Negatif by the French psychoanalyst and thinker Andre Green. Green draws our attention to the work of the negative in Freud, examining aspects that are not normally associated with it: dream work, the work of mourning, identification, etc. The kernel of Green's argument is that the development of the ego and any experiencing of ourselves as subjects has to be achieved against an essential background of loss and absence. The phrase work of the negative refers to how we do or do not cope with this inevitability of lacking what we want.

Written by distinguished psychoanalysts, the collection develops the theme of his most famous paper of the same title, and describes the value of the dead mother to other areas of clinical interest: psychic reality, borderline phenomena, passions and identification. The concept of the 'dead mother' describes a clinical phenomenon, sometimes difficult to identify, but always present in a substantial number of patients. It describes a process by which the image of a living and loving mother is transformed into a distant figure; a toneless, practically inanimate, dead parent. In reality, the mother remains alive, but she has psychically 'died' for the child. This produces a depression in the child, who carries these feelings within him into adult life, as the experience of the loss of the mother's love is followed by the loss of meaning in life. Nothing makes sense any more for the child, but life seems to continue under the appearance of normality. The Dead Mother is a valuable contribution to literature on psychoanalytic and psychotheraputic approaches to grief, loss and depression.

This English translation of Narcissisme de Vie Narcissisme de Mort covers Green's attempt to link the theory of narcissism to Freud's final theory of the drives. While narcissism is generally only considered in terms of its positive aspects in which it is linked to the life drives, Green shows that it is necessary to postulate the existence of a death-giving narcissism, which he calls negative narcissism.
