一部极其感人的纪录电影，由新闻工作出身的日本导演伏原健之拍摄，他在三顾茅庐后，终以四封信获得隐居山林建筑师津端修一与英子夫妇点头「我们愿意协助」，开始著手拍摄这部电影。
一幢深居林间的小屋，位于日本高藏寺新城的一隅。那是建筑师津端修一、按著其师安东尼雷蒙德自豪的木造住宅所建成的。一年四季景緻万千，庭园栽植的上百种蔬果，经由其妻英子的巧手都成了道道佳餚。不论烹饪、裁缝、耕作，没有一样能难得倒她。他们的家居处处充满体贴与用心，印证建筑大师科比意的名言「房子该是生活的藏宝盒」。
津端修一曾任日本住宅公团首席建筑师，60年代便提出保留树林为风开道的理念，希望新的建案都能开始与自然共生，却不为当时以发展经济优先的政策所採纳，徒成一片片了无生气的集合住宅。他于是改从自身做起，不仅放下繁忙工作，并在住宅区购入土地、盖起房屋也种植了林木。在历经半世纪的时光后，两夫妇的勤奋与优雅，果然为这片淨土栽下了无数珍宝...

早已过了而立之年的一子（安藤樱 饰）整天百无聊赖，她根本无心帮助打理自家的料理店，整日玩游戏虐杀小外甥。她的妹妹二三子（早织 饰）离婚后回到娘家，极度看不惯姐姐的作为，为此两姐妹甚至大打出手。自感不被家人所容的一子搬了出去，并在日常光顾的百元超市谋得收银员的职位。这间小 店云集着许多怪人，患有忧郁症的店长、话唠猥琐的同事、因盗窃被开除却还时常回来拿临过期食品的老太。在这些人中间，一子的心情愈加苦闷。偶然机缘，她和名不见经传的拳击手狩野（新井浩文 饰）走到一起，无奈他们之间甚至连爱情都谈不上。极度压抑之际一子选择学习拳击，她渴望释放心中的委屈和不满，渴望获得哪怕只有一次的认可。

Danshun himself was inspired as a little boy to become a rakugoka after seeing the legendary Danshi. He had found his calling. In this humorous paean to the joys of food, a pair of truck drivers happen onto a decrepit roadside shop selling ramen noodles. The widowed owner, Tampopo, begs them to help her turn her establishment into a paragon of the "art of noodle-soup making". Interspersed are satirical vignettes about the importance of food to different aspects of human life.
