A new documentary will see BAFTA- and Academy Award-winning director and acclaimed cineaste Martin Scorsese describe his relationship to iconic British filmmaking duo Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.
Scorsese describes how, from a young age, he was captivated by their films, how they helped shape his own filmmaking and how a later friendship with Powell left an indelible mark on his own life. Brought to life with a treasure trove of rare archive material from the personal collections of Powell, Pressburger and Scorsese, the story will be told using diaries, audio recordings, home movies, personal snapshots and, of course, the films themselves.

This is a gem that is lost amongst the crap that came out in the mid nineties American cinema. The first time I saw this film I thought that it was bizarre, yet in some odd way compelling. I have since seen it seven or eight more times and it gets better each time. The humor is dark and unconventional, and the dialog is odd in that it is difficult to determine whether or not its meant to be funny or is simply poor writing, I still have not figured that out which is probably one of the reasons I love this film.
The cast is of course outstanding, which is why I first rented this film knowing nothing about it. It must have had a very short theater shelf life. Dennis Hopper, Ethan Hawke and produced by Martin Scorcese, how could you go wrong? But the truly outstanding performance, and the majority of the quotable lines are spoken by Christopher Walken. His characters name is Kim Ulander, classic, and walken does what walken does best in this role, he plays a psychopath.

« J’ai rencontré Martin Scorsese quand il était encore un étudiant en cinéma à l’université de New York. Il venait à mes projections. Mais notre amitié a commencé quand il a fait son premier long métrage, Who’s That Knocking at My Door ? Mon frère Adolfas, Shirley Clarke et moi, on a rejoint Marty pour une émission radio de deux heures pour lancer son film. Nous avons passé un très bon moment. J’ai toujours la cassette. On m’a demandé de faire un film de dix minutes sur Marty pour introduire sa rétrospective au Centre Pompidou en 2005. À ce moment-là, Marty était en train de tourner Les Infiltrés. Je lui ai demandé si je pouvais le suivre une semaine ou deux, et il a accepté. C’est ainsi que le film s’est fait. Sebastian, mon fils, m'a rejoint avec une seconde caméra. J’ai fait une version courte, puis une plus longue. Comme j'étais très occupé par d’autres projets, j’ai demandé à Benn Northover, l’un de mes amis, de m'aider à le monter – j’avais quinze heures de rushes – et nous nous sommes beaucoup amusés parce que nous aimons tous Marty. James Toback:" The film idea was generated by conversations Alec and I have had over a long period of time and we decided we'd go to Cannes and shoot a record of our quest to find money to make a movie, which in effect is not a movie we're definitely making, but rather one we will make in the future if we raise the money for it here. This film is about that process, documenting the progress and the potential success or failure of the two of us in a picaresque attempt to obtain the financing of a movie we have a general idea about making."

He settled in Southern California, and became Hollywood's go-to shoemaker during the silent era. In 1927, he returned to Italy and founded in Florence his namesake luxury brand. This feature-length documentary recounts his adventures.

The "digital revolution" reached the cinema late and was chiefly styled as a technological advancement. Today, in an era where analog celluloid strips are disappearing, and given the diversity of digital moving picture formats, there is much more at stake: Are the world's film archives on the brink of a dark age? Are we facing the massive loss of collective audiovisual memory? Is film dying, or just changing?
