I thought I’d write about what it’s like to become a Canadian citizen, and take part in the citizenship ceremony… from a laptop.

In 1964, Buster Keaton came to Canada to make his final silent film. It was The Railrodder, a 25 min comedic travelogue produced by the National Film Board.
NFB filmmaker Gerald Potterton had the idea of making a film about a man going across Canada in a motorized rail cart.
Keaton agreed to be in the film because he loved trains and wanted to experience riding the rails in Canada.
Production began in the late-summer of 1964, and the movie was filmed in chronological order from east to west. Keaton turned 69 during filming and did all of his own stunts.
Various towns across the country held celebrations and screenings of Keaton's films, and he was treated to dinners nearly every single day.
The film was released in October 1965. Audiences loved the film, which became a beloved classic. The NFB sold the TV and film rights to 43 international markets.
Keaton died on Feb. 1, 1966.

Something I didn’t know about Canada: only 1/4 of Canadians get their mail delivered directly to their door.
So if you live in a house and have your mail delivered to a mailbox next to your front entrance you are in the minority.
In the next 5 years 4 million addresses will switch to shared mailboxes (like we apartment building residents have in the entrance lobby or like in rural areas where there’s a cluster of mailboxes when you enter town).

Google has now renamed Lake Ontario for US users. They don’t even show the real name in brackets.
I used a VPN to compare: Apple hasn’t renamed it (at least not yet), nor has Dutch service Here WeGo or OpenStreetMap.
Yet another reason to ditch Google, and US tech more broadly.

1/ It was 20 years ago that I first heard of the devastating health impacts and cancer cluster in Fort Chipewyan, home of the Mikisew Cree First Nation downstream from oil sands tailings "ponds”.
(Scare quotes justified because even 20 years ago those toxic lakes were so vast they could be seen from space.)
Dr. John O’Connor, a physician who worked in the community, became a whistleblower - and was vilified and targeted for that work.
Today, according to the First Nation, cancer rates in the community are at least 25% higher than the rest of Alberta, but we don’t know exactly how much because the UCP government stopped publicizing that vital public health data in 2022.
And now the Alberta Energy Regulator, clearly captured by the industry, is going to let Suncor release oil sands tailings directly into the Athabasca river, without environmental assessment.
