Friends, it's once again time for us to humbly ask for your help with getting by.. #MutualAidRequest ($200/$800)

Good Morning Everyone,The good news is, it's been more than three weeks since our last begpost!! We're both still employed and it looks like my upcoming average weekly hours are on the mend after the usual first-quarter retail slump.The bad news is, we're still struggling a little to get on our feet. The increase of aforementioned scheduled work hours won't happen for several more weeks, so funds will be tight for a bit longer.On top of that, we've had multiple one-off expenses; my partner finally convinced me to allow my six-year-old Pixel 4 to rest in peace, which will piss me off til the end of time because I know I could get at least a couple more years out of it if the damned battery weren't welded on. Fucking planned obsolescence.It got to the point where it was getting very, very warm during charging and was almost unusable unless strapped to a wireless battery charger (the USB port ceased charging a couple years ago). We figured since I'm walking and/or riding the bus home from work late at night it might be a good idea to have a lifeline.The phone replacement was probably the most significant expense this month, but we've also needed to address things or difficulties that we had indefinitely postponed due to our precarious poverity living situation the past two years until the <a href="/tags/fediverse/" rel="tag">#Fediverse</a> gave us the chance to stage a true, honest-to-goodness comeback for the first time in our lives. We finally have all-purpose cleaner and Softscrub again after years of just.. not cleaning anything. Our pantry is slowly becoming stocked. An upgraded Crock-Pot (on a killer sale) gives us much more flexibility than the 2-qt slow-cooker we've always used. We still need to get the oil changed, replace the wiper blades to have functional windshield wipers, and get the dog to the vet for the first time in almost five years. But.. one step at a time. We're still recovering and can't do everything at once, much as we wish we could.Anyway since I'm off today and tomorrow, I have no daily pay advances to guess about which means I can start fundraising a couple days earlier this time, which is always helpful.I realize this amount is even *greater* than what we needed at the beginning of January for rent, which seems like we're going backwards; but as I mentioned above, we had a substantial expense replacing my phone in addition to lower than usual weekly work hours and the cost of replenishing our pantry and fridge and so on. Without those almost exclusively one-time (or at least quite rare) expenses, this amount would be less than half.So.. I must respectfully ask for your <a href="/tags/mutualaid/" rel="tag">#MutualAid</a> help yet again. I know things are.. awful everywhere. Everyone needs help right now; I can't begin to imagine what others are going through right now. I know there are so many, many people who need help. Migrated from <a href="https://activitypub.software/TransFem-org/Sharkey" rel="nofollow">Sharkey</a> to <a href="https://gotosocial.org/" rel="nofollow">GoToSocial</a>, because I wanted something more light-weight and less feature-rich (though I do have to say that Sharkey is excellent and has tons of features and control. I highly recommend it to somebody who really wants a lot from their Fediverse software). I probably sent out some unnecessary notifications by mistake while backloading my posts. Sorry about that.I wrote <a href="https://forge.axfive.net/Taylor/migrate-sharkey-posts-to-mastodon" rel="nofollow">this python script</a> for doing the actual backloading. Scaling: ActivityPub over NNTP?

Here’s an interesting thought experiment. Way back in the 1980s and 90s, Usenet was a sorta-federated discussion forum (using the NNTP protocol) that was very popular. It still exists and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet#Usenet_traffic_changes" rel="nofollow">is distributing 400 million messages each day</a> (mostly spam and trash as far as I can tell). Hard numbers are difficult to come by but it seems like Usenet is capable of significantly higher throughput. Why is that? The big thing holding ActivityPub back is the fan-out. You know the story - someone with 50,000 followers causes their instance to send up to 50,000 HTTP POSTs every time they click the little spinny star or reply to something. It’s basically a hub-and-spoke network topology. Except everyone takes turns being the hub, ideally, but not much in practice. And in this topology, the hubs are where the strain and bottlenecks are. Back in the 1980s they had computers literally 1000 times slower than ours and network links to match. So how did they do this? With a peer to peer network topology! When a new post is made, they don’t send it to everyone they just send it to a handful of other servers. Those servers in turn forward the post on to a handful of other peers, and so on, until the whole network receives the post. No individual server is a single point of failure and none has to bear the full brunt of orchestrating it all. Let’s do a picture. A creates a post and sends it to B and D. A ─ B ─ C \ / ─ D ─ B sends it on to C. Meanwhile D sends it on the C also but C already has it so does nothing more. IRL this would be a much larger mesh. Who peers with who can be a mixture of manual selection and random spiciness. Posts can arrive out of order so each server would need to wait until the dependencies between posts are resolved before making them available to clients. That’s a bit tricky. In the ActivityPub-over-NNTP idea, each NNTP post would be a thin wrapper around a data structure containing the HTTP headers (with signature and digest) and JSON that a normal HTTP POSTed Activity would have. Servers would use NNTP to distribute the activities and upon receiving one they’d POST it to their own /inbox to run the usual ActivityPub processing that their AP instance does. { "headers": { "Signature": "...", "Digest": "...", "Date": "..." }, "activity": { ... normal ActivityPub JSON ... } } In this way there is no need to rewrite ActivityPub semantics as only the transport layer changes. Our existing inbox logic remains intact. NNTP comes with a lot of historical baggage so we’d probably need to evolve the protocol a bit. Maybe use HTTP requests (even http2 streams?) instead of <a href="https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc3977" rel="nofollow">the original line-oriented text protocol using raw TCP sockets</a>.
