The view this morning of Mauna Loa's Southwest Rift Zone from the South Point area. Certainly, the cameras of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park are known for their dramatic images of exposed geology, lava lakes, cinder cones, and steaming thermal areas, but this site, lower in elevation and near to the coast, shows a gentle collection of wind-blown vegetation in colors of green and tan, lit by the morning sun (foreground). The middle ground includes a few man-made features such as power lines and structures, while the background shows the sweeping landforms of the island, all under an early morning blue sky.
