Trees, mountains, and the roads and trails that make getting to them so much easier, as this image from Two Medicine in Glacier National Park shows. The colors of the exposed geology are greys, greens, reds, and pinks, stretching from left to right in the upper half of the view. A deep blue sky with just a few white clouds appears above the mountains, with early fall colors evident in the vegetation below. The majority of the foreground is green trees with light trunks bisected by a silver-grey roadway that is partly in shadow. Sunrise this morning in Glacier National Park. Beautiful colors of gold, orange, and blue, silhouetted mountains, and a calm Lake McDonald combine for a particularly lovely image. Specifically, the sun is illuminating the bottoms of the clouds (center right) and these yellow, pink, and orange colors are mirrored by the lake below. In the distance, grey-white clouds appear over the lake, still in the shadows of the mountains. The furthest mountains are grey-blue (center). Those nearer to the lake are a deep blue-black (right). The dock in the lower left extends from an invisible shore towards a boat floating calmly in the water.

The view this morning of Mauna Loa's Southwest Rift Zone from the South Point area. Certainly, the cameras of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park are known for their dramatic images of exposed geology, lava lakes, cinder cones, and steaming thermal areas, but this site, lower in elevation and near to the coast, shows a gentle collection of wind-blown vegetation in colors of green and tan, lit by the morning sun (foreground). The middle ground includes a few man-made features such as power lines and structures, while the background shows the sweeping landforms of the island, all under an early morning blue sky. Thanks to the US Geological Survey for providing these beautiful images.
