<p>I really wish that I was born early so I’ve could witness the early years of Linux. <p>I’ve seen people advocating for both options, but since I’m still new to Linux I’m not sure what to do. <p>A few years ago my wife and I built a computer out of old parts for her friend’s then 10 years old son. Last month we were visiting them, and I heard the wife’s friend say something funny that I thought I’d share with you.</p><p>They live on the other side of the city, this was the kid’s first computer, and his mom doesn’t have much computer experience either, so our goal was to build something that was easy to use and hard to break from the beginning. Originally I choose ElementaryOS since it seemed to fit the bill, but after a year or two it turned out that it couldn’t be upgraded to a new major version without a full reinstall so it got stuck with an older version. We didn’t visit that often, and the kid’s games still worked so it wasn’t a major issue until Factorio broke due to glibc incompatibility.</p><p>When his birthday was coming up last month we bought him a SSD to make the computer a little bit zippier without a major upgrade, and I thought I’d give him a brand new Linux experience too, so <a href="https://lemmy.world/post/27604537" rel="nofollow">I asked for advice here</a> and in the end chose Bazzite. While I was helping the kid with the installation, I overheard his mom saying in the other room:</p><p><p>This Linux thing… We’ve never had any problems with it, he just clicks something to install it and it works. <p>Hey there folks,</p><p>I’m trying to figure out how to configure my UFW, and I’m just not sure where to start. What can I do to see the intetnet traffic from individual apps so I can know what I might want to block? This is just my personal computer and I’m a total newbie to configuring firewalls so I’m just not sure how to go about it. <p>I go to a programming school, where there were computers running ancient windows 8 and some were on windows 10, they ran really slow and were completely unrelaible when doing the tasks that are required, those computers in question had either i5-4750 (I think?) or i7-4970 so running windows 10 with all its bloat was not going to be an easy task for em, so long story short I decided to talk to the principal about it explaining why linux is so much better than windows and gave him reasons why linux will be better for us for education and he agreed after considering it for a bit, he let me know that some students play roblox or minecraft in middle of the lesson and he asks if linux would stop em from doing that, I stated that as long as they dont know how to work with wine/lutris or know any specific linux packages that run windows games on linux they should not be able to play in the middle of lessons.he gave me the green light to do it, so I spent like 3 days migrating like 20+ computers to linux (since I had to set them up and install some required applications for them)in the last day where I was doing a last check up on the PCs to make sure they are in working order, there was a computer having a problem of which where it didnt boot, I let the principal know about this to get permission to work on it, he said yes, so after some troubleshooting I realized the boot order was all screwed, so since Ive worked with arch before I knew how to fix it, I booted up linux mint live image, chrooted, and fixed the boot order and computer went back to life, prinicipal came in checked on everything to make sure everything works, told me to wait for a bit, and then came back and paid me for his troubles (was a bit of a surprised since I expected nothing of the sort), the next day I came to school, sat down, turned PC on, noticed something was in the trash bin, opened it, found “robloxinstall.exe” on it, told the principal about it, he was pleased with it, so now 2 weeks later he seems now to be confident about linux, as he told me there is another class he is considering to move to linux.</p><p>so my question here would be: does this mean linux now is ready for the education sector?</p><p>(considering now, that I got a win win situation, I get to use an OS that I like in school, students gets to focus on the lessons instead of slacking.)</p> <small class="notice" x-post-type-data="None"> Takahe has limited support for this type: <a href="https://sopuli.xyz/post/26331954">See Original Page</a> </small>

<p>Today I can share a major development status update of <a href="https://github.com/xpipe-io/xpipe" rel="nofollow">XPipe</a>, a new connection hub that allows you to access your entire server infrastructure from your local desktop. It can make your life easier when working with any kind of servers by eliminating all the commonly tedious tasks that come up when interacting with remote systems, either from the terminal or from a graphical interface. XPipe comes with integrations for SSH, docker and other containers, various hypervisors, and more without requiring setup on your remote systems. You can also keep using your favourite text/code editors, terminals, password managers, shells, command-line tools, and more with it.</p><p></p><p>Tailscale SSH support</p><p>You can now connect to devices in your tailnet via Tailscale SSH and your locally installed tailscale command-line client. This integration supports multiple accounts as well to switch between different tailnets.</p><p>Custom icons</p><p>You can now add custom icons to use for your connections. This implementation replaces the old model of shipping the icons from <a href="https://github.com/selfhst/icons" rel="nofollow">github.com/selfhst/icons</a> along XPipe. Instead, you can now dynamically add sources of icons. This can either be a local directory or a remote git repository that can be cloned and pulled by xpipe. XPipe will pick up any .svg files in there, rasterize them to cached .pngs, and display them in XPipe.</p><p>As default icon sources, it will still come with the <a href="https://github.com/selfhst/icons" rel="nofollow">github.com/selfhst/icons</a> repository enabled, but now it can fetch these icons at runtime. If you are using the git vault sync, you can also add icons to a synced directory in your git vault to have access to them on all systems.</p><p></p><p>New docs</p><p>There is a new documentation site at <a href="https://docs.xpipe.io" rel="nofollow">docs.xpipe.io</a>. The goal is to expand this over time to provide proper documentation for many features.</p><p>Since it came up quite a bit last time I posted about XPipe here, I hope that any questions about what exactly XPipe is, how it makes your life easier, what it can do, and more, can now be answered in detail by the documentation.</p><p>Webtop enhancements</p><p>The webtop, a container-based KDE desktop environment, received a general overhaul. The list of terminals, editors, and rdp clients has been updated. The language support has been improved so that you can now easily run the desktop environment in any language you want. There were also many new additions and fixes for preinstalled tools of the desktop environment. There is also now more webtop documentation at <a href="https://docs.xpipe.io/guide/webtop" rel="nofollow"><span class="invisible">https://</span>docs.xpipe.io/guide/webtop</a></p><p></p><p>Package manager repositories</p><p>There is now an apt repository available at <a href="https://apt.xpipe.io" rel="nofollow">apt.xpipe.io</a> and an rpm repository available at <a href="https://rpm.xpipe.io" rel="nofollow">rpm.xpipe.io</a>. You can add them as sources to apt or your rpm-based package manager. This allows you to also install and upgrade xpipe via your native package manager instead of using the built-in self-updater.</p><p>Other</p><p>Add support for Gnome Console and Ptyxis Terminal<br>Add support for cosmic-term of the new cosmic desktop environment<br>Add the ability to launch connections from the command-line with the <a href="https://docs.xpipe.io/guide/connection-launch#from-the-terminal" rel="nofollow">xpipe launch</a> command<br>Add new action to run scripts in the file browser and show their output without having to open a terminal<br>You can now import saved PuTTY sessions on a system when searching for available connections. This also works for KiTTY<br>Improve application performance when having many connections and categories</p><p>A note on the open-source model</p><p>Since it has come up a few times, in addition to the note in the git repository, I would like to clarify that XPipe is not fully FOSS software. The core that you can find on GitHub is Apache 2.0 licensed, but the distribution you download ships with closed-source extensions. There’s also a licensing system in place with limitations on what kind of systems you can connect to in the community edition as I am trying to make a living out of this.
