I've been out of the loop for a couple of years on Linux phones. I'm poking around on blogs and Mastodon posts, but I figured I'd just ask:
Whats currently (as of January 2026) the most functional, stable, boring phone + OS combination?
Edit: I have been so thrilled with the conversations! Thank you all for sharing projects, experiences, knowledge, and links! I'm also following a lot of new folks :) This post is at 400+ boosts, so no need to continue boosting :)
I wish there was a crowdfunding campaign somewhere to get a reasonably modern phone up and running reliably with real Linux.
I'm talking something with PostmarketOS / Mobian + Phosh/Plasma Mobile / Gnome Mobile and the basics made reliable:
* wifi
* mobile data
* calls
* suspend/wake
* camera
Maybe make Waydroid integration a stretch goal, but not a core requirement.
I would gladly throw a bunch of money at something with the promise to get the basics to work reliably.
Maybe the issue isn't money, but it sure seems like pooling funding for some of the highly talented people working in the space couldn't hurt.
Anyone know of anything like this?

In around two weeks I’m migrating from iOS to a postmarketOS phone. Please leave app suggestions, I’m definitely going to need them!
Waydroid is… fine, but not preferred Please avoid android apps unless it’s something that is like confirmed to work well on waydroid, is proprietary or something so has no alternatives or something like that. I’m not launching waydroid to listen to music, to read my e-mails or to use xmpp.
Some examples of what I’m looking for, probably for Plasma Mobile:
Is there like… LibreOffice Mobile or something? To substitute the iWork suite?
Apple Music clients
Something self-hosted to substitute Siri, with ability to set timers and stuff
A reminders app that can sync with a caldav server
Is there a port of GadgetBridge for Linux?
I’ll probably make my own water logging and HealthKit-alternative app/“protocol” if that’s not a thing yet, but less work is less work if that exists
A XMPP client, preferably with spaces support
Immich client (preferably with some form of caching for recent photos)
Bitwarden client
HomeAssistant client
E-mail client
These will probably go on waydroid, but: WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord and Signal clients
Some kind of map app, maybe with live traffic data?
Some kind of backup wizzard to my NAS, tho I’ll probably just make some rsync scripts
A better keyboard than Plasma Mobile’s default
And also just anything y’all find useful in your daily life with a postmarketOS daily driver, I’m sure I’m forgetting a lot of stuff here.
I know some of those exist for desktop Linux, but I’m obviously looking for stuff made with phones in mind (so like… apps made for gnome should be automatically fine maybe?)
(Also, has anyone managed to get nix’s system-manager to work on postmarketOS? There’s no way I’m configuring all of this by hand every time I need to flash it lmao)

I have good news and bad news.
Good news: My son has been born this week. He's wonderful, his mom's more than awesome (the birth (and aftermath) wasn't easymode, I'll not share further details other then that I have been full of joy but also really fearful at times, but German healthcare, at least where we live, is excellent).
Bad news: No weekly #MobileLinux update tonight/this week, and likely not for a bit - can't quite say, it really depends on how well we adjust to this new life.
(So if you always wanted to do something similar/better, go ahead!)
