The Survey Ship Farley, near Exoplanet 05843, first thought this was a normal comet. But once in range they found something strange. It’s a seed pod, from an interstellar flower. They are launched from this home planet into space. We assume they are launched to find other planets to germinate the seeds, but we have yet to find a planet that has been colonised. After being imported onto Exoplanet 74632, and the devastation they caused, they have been outlawed on all known planets.

This is a plant, or the seed pod of a plant. There is a green stem, and then there is a small round green ball. Sticking out of the ball are spines. They end in little hooks. I assume the tiny hooks are designed to hold onto fur and transport the seeds to far flung planets. There is a black background, so it could be in space. But probably not.

This story is amazing.

Giant octopuses of the Cretaceous were up to 19 meters (60 feet) long.

They were the apex ocean predators of their day, eating up plesiosaurs and mosasaurs.

And they were apparently quite intelligent.

Nature is a befuddling combination of regularity (high tide, then low tide, then high tide again) and what seems to be random weather catastrophes (tsunamis, earthquakes).

She's not tame or boring. But she also is not actuated by greed, so though she may be unexpected in her actions, she is not evil.

Rated The Grey 5/10

Liam Neeson is the only watchable character among the survivors. Part of this is because he gets the opportunity to wax philosophical, but it's also because the remaining crew never become useful characters. If you've seen The Edge you'll realize this is a poor entry in the survivor genre since it, too, follows the formulaic trope of the last man standing. There's plenty of man vs. nature symbolism, but not enough depth about other things--family, masculinities, and the relationship(s) between capitalism and conservation, for starters. As a film it's about as barren as its wintry landscapes. Neeson is great, there's just nothing new here.
