Normally, cloud bottoms are flat. This is because moist warm air that rises and cools will condense into water droplets at a specific temperature, which usually corresponds to a very specific height. As water droplets grow, an opaque cloud forms. Under some conditions, however, cloud pockets can develop that contain large droplets of water or ice that fall into clear air as they evaporate. Such pockets may occur in turbulent air near a thunderstorm. Resulting mammatus clouds can appear especially dramatic if sunlit from the side. <p>The Devil&#x27;s Slide Tunnel.<br>December 8th, 2025, 3:58 p.m.</p><p>This was a joint effort with my husband Chris (studiochris on Mastodon). After spending an afternoon in Half Moon Bay with Jeri Dansky, just before heading home we set my camera for a one second exposure at f/22... and, while I drove through the tunnel, Chris balanced the camera above the dashboard and kept the shutter firing, which actually makes Chris the photographer and me the guy in the chair who says Engage.</p><p>After we got home, I tried several methods of merging the best 8 or 9 shots in post... but I ended up liking this single exposure best because it was sharper than any of the muddier merges.</p><p><a href="/tags/photography/" rel="tag">#Photography</a></p>
