<p>Yesterday, 4:24 p.m.</p><p>I haven't been out shooting recently (too much going on) but yesterday I drove 4 blocks up our hill to snap a picture of some townhouses that are getting new siding.</p><p>I've always been fascinated by these townhomes. Built in 1978, each has approximately 2000 square feet inside (three bedrooms, two and a half baths), with six stories in the rear but just a single story facing the street up top (where the garage is). Actually, the lower three stories of the townhomes, in the rear, are purely foundation, not living space. Because slopes.</p><p>Unsurprisingly, the townhouses have killer views of the bay and all of downtown San Francisco. Yes, $1.5M in this part of town can get you a view... but not necessarily a yard you can sit in and have a picnic or a pitcher full of martinis.</p><p>Anyway, I think the scaffolding around the building is kind of cool. So I took a picture. </p><p><a href="/tags/photography/" rel="tag">#photography</a> <a href="/tags/newtopographics/" rel="tag">#NewTopographics</a></p>

A tall building rises like the prow of a battleship over a steep slope in the Diamond Heights, Goldmine Hill neighborhood. The building is surrounded by scaffolding as work proceeds on the exterior siding.

The photo was taken on a dark afternoon in the rainy season (winter here). So there are gray skies above and green grass on the slope, with a few bushy things clinging to the otherwise sparsely vegetated earth.

I captured this image in an old museum on mid north coast, NSW, Australia.

Clothes washer technology developed as a way to reduce the manual labor spent, providing an open basin or sealed container with paddles or fingers to automatically agitate the clothing. The earliest machines were hand-operated and constructed from wood, while later machines made of metal permitted a fire to burn below the washtub, keeping the water warm throughout the day's washing.

The earliest special-purpose washing device was the scrub board, invented in 1797.

By the mid-1850s, steam-driven commercial laundry machinery was on sale in the UK and US. Technological advances in machinery for commercial and institutional washers proceeded faster than domestic washer design for several decades, especially in the UK. In the US there was more emphasis on developing machines for washing at home, though machines for commercial laundry services were widely used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The rotary washing machine was patented by Hamilton Smith in 1858. As electricity was not commonly available until at least 1930, some early washing machines were operated by a low-speed single-cylinder hit and miss gasoline engine.

After the items were washed and rinsed, water had to be removed by twisting. To help reduce this labor, the wringer/mangle machine was developed.
