A cluster of small, slender mushrooms growing out of a thick carpet of bright green moss. The mushrooms have thin, pale white or cream-colored stems and bell-shaped to slightly conical caps that are a warm, moist-looking brown or tan color, with some having darker centers.

A beam of sunlight illuminates the mushrooms and the moss, creating strong highlights on the wet-looking caps and stems, and casting deep shadows that add to the atmosphere of the image.

i really like mushrooms and i am learning my way around them - especially the ones endemic to my area

my main fascination is with photographing and identifying, and noting the changes and relationships between the parts of our forest and field biomes, and the fungi moss lichen and slime molds coming and going with the seasons and with the ebb and flow of forest growth/death/regeneration

but on no account should you ever eat or even handle any mushroom that is unknown to you. especially on my say-so. i know i don’t know nothing!

and if i threaten to eat anything truly silly, i’m probably joking

A dense cluster of fungi growing on a rotting tree stump in a forest during autumn. The mushrooms are growing in layered, overlapping groups. Their caps vary in color, transitioning from a light yellowish-tan or golden-brown at the edges and in the center of the younger, upper mushrooms, to a darker, rich brown in the larger, more mature specimens below.

Many caps exhibit a slight concentric ring pattern or a change in color towards the center. They have a generally convex to flattened shape and appear smooth and somewhat moist or velvety.

The fungi are attached to a dark, textured wood surface, which is the tree material they are feeding on. The surrounding area is the forest floor, scattered with leaf litter in various shades of brown and yellow.

A dozen shelf mushrooms, ranging in size from 5-10 inches and an inch high, grow from the bottom of a dead hemlock. The mushrooms are quite fresh. Their colors bright and glistening. The inner attachment to the bark of the tree are a deep brown/red, transitioning to yellow and then to a creamy white at the edges. In most of the mushrooms the edges are somewhat billowy at the edges and more sunken toward the tree.

I picked up this twig with a mushroom growing on it today, and some guy coming along the trail said, "That is awesome! Is there a smaller one next to it, too?" I looked closer and saw the smaller one. I hadn't noticed it in my own hand, and this guy had spotted it from 3-4 meters away. He must be a good hiking companion. Second photo for scale with a bit of my finger.
