The late afternoon sky is hazy, with a mix of clear skies and clouds. We are atop a mountain on a very large gray rock outcrop looking out over a deep ravine to another mountain whose flanks are covered with a dense forest of dusky green hemlocks and hardwoods just a little past their autumn peak colors. There are brick reds, burnt oranges and golden browns, but the colors are still bright. A similar forest grows on our ridgeline. Near the horizon between the two ridges, the mouth of the ravine reveals a portion of the northern outskirts of the city of Waterbury, Connecticut.

I kept bumping into Common Kingfisher. This one was chased off of the branch by the Chinese Pond Heron before I could see some actions, spotted at a small park in Putian City last week.

Mission Beach

A few random photos from our day at Mission Beach in San Diego, CA. We did go for a swim in the Pacific Ocean. While, as a New Englander, the idea of having an ocean to the West instead of the East might seem wrong and also kinda silly, it is the biggest swimming pool on the planet Earth so its pretty impressive.

One more cat for the night, then I'm off to bed. We followed three brothers running deep into the bush, spent about a hour with them, and then spent another hour trying to get back to camp after we realized we were hopelessly lost. Worth it.
