Vision of another era

We were lucky to see some of the last caribou south of the St. Lawrence River at the summit of Mont Jacques-Cartier. They are the last representatives of the large herds of woodland caribou that once occupied southern Quebec.

The woodland caribou herd of the mountain ecotype is now estimated at about 30 animals in the park.

Photograph of a male caribou seen from afar, with brown body, white neck and rump, and antlers on its head. The soil is alpine-type, with the top of this mountain made up of rocks covered in mint-green lichen and small, very low, yellow and green grasses. Behind the caribou, the summit of the neighbouring mountain, called "Dos de baleine" (whale's back), a grey wall of rocks and some patches of vegetation. Above, the sky is pure pale blue.
