Mannen met verentooien, in Mexico, Ed van der Elsken, 1960

#Mannen #Mexico #EdvanderElsken #verentooien #fotografie #photography #EdVanDerElsken #EdvanderElsken

http://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/collection/RP-F-2019-298-9-87

A black and white photograph featuring individuals dressed in elaborate feather headdresses, which suggests a cultural or ceremonial significance. The foreground shows one person with distinct jewelry on the headpiece and another individual partially visible behind him. The background is filled with foliage that appears to be part of an outdoor setting, possibly during daytime given the lighting conditions. Notable features include detailed textures like feathers and beads in the headdress, which contribute to a sense of cultural richness captured through visual storytelling by photographer Ed van der Elsken as documented in Mannen met verentooien, Mexico 1960.

When visiting Mount Martha a few months ago I took a morning walk with some friends along the Balcombe Estuary Boardwalk Circuit. It's an absolutely gorgeous walk. The place is beautiful, and the thick trees provide a nice shade that allows the sunlight to filter through in a very satisfying way.

I'm dropping this in as a #shittember entry. In my eyes, the focus isn't really great on the image and I can't get the lighting dynamics quite right. I like the image but posting this one makes me a bit uncomfortable, and (at least to me) #shittember is somewhat about easing up on yourself, freeing yourself of those performance criteria, and just doing it anyway, so here it is.

Balcombe Estuary Boardwalk Circuit, Mount Martha, Victoria, Australia

A photograph of an elevated boardwalk meandering through estuary bushland. There are many thin tree trunks on either side of the boardwalk though not many leaves to be seen. Most of the ground level is dark or in shadow, though some of the boardwalk is illuminated by bright sunlight that has filtered through the trees, and there is some greenery (perhaps grass or similar) on either side of the boardwalk further in the distance. It is hard to tell what is underneath the boardwalk from the image though it looks as there is branch and tree litter as well as some kind of grass, and it may be above some kind of small river or wetland. The bark on the tree trunks is light in colour and heavily textured, and looks like you could peel it off in sheets almost like thin paper. The edges of the trunks in the distance catch the sunlight and appear almost a light chocolate brown in colour. The angular boardwalk is made of horizontal strips of wood, and is lined with raised wooden edges.

At the bottom of the picture, trees appear as dark silhouettes. Behind them, a setting yellow sun blazes, bathing the clouds and sky in fiery gold, which fades upwards into orange and majestic turquoise.
Fire and tranquillity united.

No opportunity to get away from home this weekend, so it's time for something from my quiet garden. We see many hoverflies at this time of year (spring here in Victoria, AUS). I finally decided I'd better find out their name - Common Halfband which is one of the two most common species. With the eyes touching at the top of the head, I think this is a male.

A Common Halfband hoverfly with yellow edges on the side of the abdomen and an all-black thorax. The body length is about 10mm (<1/2"), and with the eyes touching at the top of the head, I think this is a male. It is feeding on nectar from a yellow-and-white daisy.
