Some recent #Smithereen updates:
- Finished discussion boards in groups
- Server rules (with translations)
- New reporting flow, almost like Mastodon's
- Moderators can now exclude content from reports
- ...as well as add extra content via the new "content" tab in user moderation UI
- Admins can now specify custom CSS for their server
- Admins can create announcements that display under the main menu for all users
#Smithereen now supports pinned posts.

This one mostly focuses on groups and moderation. Groups now have discussion boards, admins can specify server rules (with translations!), moderators have more and better tools at their disposal, and users can now pin posts and export their data.

Now comes the part where I build the client API I promised everyone for so long. And the website.
I need opinions on #Smithereen API.
For notifications, which format would you prefer more, this https://smithereen.software/docs/api/methods/notifications.get/ or something even more deduplicated with `wall_posts`, `comments`, `photos`, and `board_topics` as separate arrays? Or maybe something else?
Private groups
Lately, I've been seeing various people claiming that fediverse doesn't have private groups. They often point to some task force at w3c that is supposedly working to fill the gap.
However, fediverse has had private groups for a very long time:
- Hubzilla channels. This project probably had private groups before ActivityPub. The implementation was later adapted for ActivityPub and refined in subsequent forks, Streams and Forte. It is now partially documented in FEP-171b: Conversation Containers.
- Smithereen groups. This implementation is documented in FEP-400e: Publicly-appendable ActivityPub collections (published in 2021) and FEP-db0e: Authentication mechanism for non-public groups.
- Lemmy communities. Private groups were proposed in Lemmy RFC 0005 and have been implemented in the development version. There is a test instance running this version (Lemmy v1.0b) at https://voyager.lemmy.ml/
There are probably other implementations that I am not aware of.
